Handicapping Contests: Which one and how to enter?
Do any of you guys know about the official contests in Vegas, and how one would get involved?
I have heard of the the National Handicapping Championship associated with DRF, and I have also heard of the the "World Series of Handicapping". I'd like to (eventually) try to enter one, and I don't know how to actually get started. One key question: Do these contests allow the individual to take a laptop computer with him, and do they have internet connectivity? I have tried to automate some of the calculations I do and I do not see me trying to "pen and paper" my way through such an undertaking. Any info much appreciated... Joe

to get into the NTRA/DRF one, you need to qualify to get there. you cannot just buy-into it. Normally, you have to place in the top 3 in another contest or series of contests.
HPWS at Orleans, I think you can buy-in for $1000 if you don't qualify for it thru another contest. don't know about the laptops out there (I'd assume you can have one with you, in your hotel room, but not in the sportsbook nor any other part of the casino). I've been trying for the last few years to qualify through the free online qualifiers. Made it to the finals of them a few times and been close, but haven't been top 3 in the final yet. Brisnet runs a couple qualifiers for them online where you have to be top 50 in one of their first round qualifiers to get to the final. First, play in contests thats suit your type of play. I personaly hate the $2 WPS only contests. I like the Lone Star Tournaments cause it covers Tri's, Supers, WPS and EX Box
I came second at the Lone Star Handicaping Qualifiers on April 5th and I will be there on Oct 18th for the Lone Star NTRA Qualifying finals. I hope I can make it in the top 3 so I can go to vegas in JAN

Well, where computers are allowed, do they also provide "wi-fi" connectivity, or do I need to download everything I need before I go into the contest area?
I, like most people, would use the computer for making complex calculations faster, but if it doesn't have the info on the hard drive already, I'd need to download stuff or it would be useless. By the way, is that DRF book on Handicapping Contests any good?

if you want a daily one to try.... (won't get you to Vegas, but something free to try)

if you're serious you should prolly try to get familiar just playing in vegas to get familiar with travel arrangements, set-ups etc. so you dont have to think about all the extraneous once you're there for the big dance - at the Orleans there's a Labor Day qualifier (9/1 SAR closing day) $100 entry fee, limit 2 entries, win/place format, no partners, top 5 win a qualifying spot in the 2009 Horseplayers World Series, they're offering rooms at $45 and there are cheap flights out there - then there's the Fall Classic on October 9th-11th, entry fee is $500, top 50 finishers will qualify - phone number is 1-888-566-7223, can ask them to email you a brochure.. oh, they also feed you, very well in fact lol..
