That's where your judgement, no matter how warped it is, kicks in.

Not sure what you mean - it's based on your handicapping. . . If you like the horse a lot it's an A, if you think he's decent B, if you think he's marginal C, and if you don't like him or want to play against him X.

i distinguish my "a" by careful analysis of the past performances and look to eliminate entrants with identifiable issues that could compromise their chances.

or...i can tell the difference between my "a" and a hole in the form.

Thats why some days you cash tickets and I don't... and sometimes I cash tickets and you don't. We all (competent handicappers) can figure out who the favorite SHOULD be, and the 2nd choice should be, etc. It's a matter of where you 'slot' them after that. For me, it's relative value. If a horse that's 2-1 and a likely winner, it's an A. If he's 2-1 and only 20% to win, it's a B or an X. If a 20-1 is 20% to win, he's an A.

I do it from more of a pace scenario. I use the A's as the ones that will most likely get the best trip, thus to me, the most likely winner. I use the B's as the best value or others that might benefit from the predicted trip and I use the C's as possible craziness, in that what if this horse gets lone speed or what happens if the only speed horse gets company up front.

I think it also really matters how the race draws. There are many races where there are 'only' two horses that have a chance at winning, thus is there really any B's and C's.

Something I learned from Andy when talking about this is that while their is always at least one A within a race, there are times where they are no B's or C's, or maybe a couple C's with 1 A, or 3 A's and 2 B's.

All it matters where you want to focus a majority of your money towards.
