Default Derby Pace??

I have been thinking about this for the past few days and it is starting to bother me.

Is there gonna be any front running speed or what?? All this talk of slow fraction times got me wondering.

Teuflesberg will be leading or Cowtown Cat??? Seems to me that this will be SLOWWW if they are out front

Any chance someone throws a "RABBIT" into the field if there is not 20??? Not saying they will but just had crossed my mind. Pletcher throws speed in??

I wouldn't worry about it, there will be enough pace and there is no one scary on the front end. Teuflesberg and Stormello will likely set the pace (not buying that Stormello will rate) with Cowtown Cat, Nobiz, and Liquidity right off them. Any Given Saturday, Hard Spun, Scat Daddy, and Curlin will be just off them. The whole stampede will push the pace.

I got to thinking about that too. The thing is that while this may not be the fastest Derby pace we've seen in the last few years, I still think the War Emblem thing is fresh enough in everyone's minds that we won't be seeing the kind of fractions we saw with War Emblem or in the Blue Grass the other day. There are enough horses with speed to get up front and enough horses with tactical speed to keep those horses honest on the front end.

It might not be sizzling, but it should be fair enough, imo.

Derby pace always seems to be honest. Even in War Emblem's year he went 23 and 47 in the first half.

With Curlin in ,the pace will be honest. Regardless of post position he will get position out of the gate even if no one wants the lead. He looks like the type of horse that will get position and relax then turn it in comming for home and some one will need a super effort to get past him. Im not ready to pick my horse yet but I feel a slow pace is not going to be a problem. If no one else runs with him on the front beware for he sure looks like the stretch could come up real short if all the closers back up on the backstretch.

Yeah, with that many horses, I would think one or more will want to get out in front. Should be honest enough.

I agree that the pace is a big question here. I'm not sure the top performers have all shown the abillity to rate . I worry about some good performers all chasing a fair to honest pace. Doesn't set up well for the off the pace gang.
