Default Why Be!

Here's a nice one from Singapore..... Why Be.

Double for Farook as Why Be fights off Capablanca 26 Feb 2007

Jo Adams - Singapore Turf Club

Apprentice J Farook ended the weekend’s racing with a double when he saluted on Coup Leader for Steven Burridge and Why Be for Laurie Laxon in the final two races on the card.

Coup Leader sat just behind the pace being set by Brave Heart and Tommaloms in the $75,000 Class 3 over 1200m, but when these two dropped off abruptly, Coup Leader skipped to the front.

He held off a challenge by Sapphire Racer (KB Soo) to win by a length with Divest (Sandana) finishing in third place a further three and a half-lengths away.

Why Be was as usual sent out an odds on favourite but he certainly had his work cut out from barrier nine when he and Prince De Lago bumped at the start in the $125,000 Kranji Stakes ‘A’ 1200m.

Farook hustled the four-year-old along though and he had plenty of gate speed to cross and lead on the rails.

He started to let down at the top of the straight, but that can be a very long 450m and as he was approaching the winning post Capablanca (Andrew Calder) was sprouting wings down the centre of the track.

The Don Baertschiger trained five-year-old landed right beside Why Be, who found enough to garner another effort, scoring by a short head on the line with Prince De Lago (Aaron Spiteri) a close finishing third.

'I think I’ll be looking for a weight-for-age race for him next,' said Why Be’s trainer Laurie Laxon.

'He’ll be too disadvantaged in the handicaps races now.'

Farook was relieved he got home on the horse but gave credit to Why Be for his fighting attitude

'He knew the other horse was there and you could feel him really fighting for the line.

'The track was heavy and with there being nine races before his, there were a few holes here and there so it wasn’t the best of surfaces for him.

'I’d really like to thank the owners and Mr Laxon for putting me on, my boss Mr (Brian) Dean and of course the STAR Program!'

Why Be’s win gave him 17 wins from 19 starts along with two seconds for the Perfectum Stable.

Farook’s double saw him jump up to be second on the junior premiership ladder with four wins, just behind last years champion rider Adam Fiezan (8).

With his four wins, Farook is level pegging with Ryan Plumb, Mark Ewe and KK Ng but he has a better record on the minor placings, which sees him officially second on the ladder.

And so it goes.....

Another win and HOY honors, all in one weekend.

Horse of the Year 'Why Be' makes it win No: 18 1 Apr 2007

By Jo Adams - Singapore Turf Club

Trainer Laurie Laxon collected the trophy for Horse of the Year Why Be on Saturday night and then backed up on Sunday for another trophy, when the super sprinter won his 18th race the $200,000 Singapore Group 3 Fischer Stakes (1200m).

On paper the race was marked in as Why Be’s before they even jumped, as all the horses were carrying the set weight of 57.5kgs. But this is racing and anything can happen at any given time.

A well deserved pat down the neck for Why Be

Fortunately for the Laxon stable and all his faithful followers, Why Be stuck to the script and won in dominating fashion by two lengths from the Don Baertschiger trained pair Capablanca (Andrew Calder) and Always Fast (Noel Callow).

Tom Higgs was the best away at the jump but Vorster quickly had Why Be high tailing him from gate seven. Why Be was on the outside of Tom Higgs but he swiftly gained control and lengthened stride to go clear by the time the field had sped past the 1000m pole.

As the field rolled along, Why Be set a genuine pace from Capablanca, Tom Higgs (Ronnie Stewart), Taurus (Adam Fiezan) and Always Fast.

Into the straight and Why Be skipped even further ahead and while Capablanca and Always Fast were making steady ground on him, once Vorster pulled the stick it was all over.

“That was the best he has ever felt,” said Vorster.

“He really enjoyed the run and it was a good win,' added the rider who made it six wins for the weekend.

Laxon, who never fails to enjoy the sprinter winning, added: “It was much better for him today, being back to the set weights.”

Trophies galore for Laxon and Vorster.

Shane Baertschiger confirmed that the stable’s two gallant runners would press on as planned.

“They’ll both be running in the Lion City Cup (Group 1 - 1200m run on May 19)

“They did well today. Take out Why Be and they’ve beaten the rest of them easily!”

Arenti (K B Soo), first-up from his stint in Dubai didn’t place, but the 1200m is not his go and he will only improve from the run and no doubt go much better when the distances increase.

On a track officially rated as Yielding, Why Be (AUS) (Success Express x Charybdis) clocked an impressive 1.10.8 for the six-furlong event and made it 18 wins from his 22 starts.
