![]() BREEDERS’ CUP MILE CHAMPION TO STAND IN VICTORIA
American turf star and Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile winner Artie Schiller will immediately become one of Victoria's elite stallions beginning with the 2007 breeding season as part of a multi-year shuttle agreement between Independent Stallions Victoria and Hurricane Hall of Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Artie Schiller captured the 2005 Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Mile on the grass defeating Leroidesanimaux, but finished a narrow second, 119 votes to 116 votes, to him in championship balloting for top American turf male. Artie Schiller was outstanding that year carrying his speed and versatility to win a number of turf events including the Grade 2 Maker's Mark Mile Stakes at Keeneland and the Grade 2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga. In a six-furlong (1200m) turf race at Belmont Park in his first start as a 2-year-old, Artie Schiller trailed by 14 1/4 lengths at one point but exploded down the straight to win. Artie Schiller also captured four turf stakes in 2004, three of which were graded, including the 1 1/8 mile (1700m) Grade 2 Jamaica Handicap in course-record time of 1:45.50 at Belmont Park. The impeccably-bred Artie Schiller who is out of the Grade 1 winning Majestic Light mare Hidden Light retired with 10 wins from 22 races and earnings of US$2,088,853. "Artie ticks all the boxes," says Mike Becker of Independent Stallions Victoria. Becker continued, "He is a fantastic looking individual, has a fantastic pedigree, and was a fantastic racehorse that proved to be the best grass miler in the world. When you toss in that he possessed a huge turn of foot, won sprinting in his first start at one America's premiere tracks, and is an outcross to Danehill - I can't think of a better stallion suited for Australia." Demand in Kentucky has been tremendous for the 6-year-old son of El Prado whose book was filled almost immediately upon his retirement in September. The Australian deal was brokered by David Bernsen of Carondelet Farm after being contacted by Ben P. Walden Jr., who owns Hurricane Hall with Brad M. Kelley, Patrick Madden, and David Hanley, to assist in placing the stallion after a flurry of enquiries were received. "Being a superb turf miler and a very good 2-year-old with a body-type that suits Australian racing, I felt from day one that Victoria would be an ideal option for Artie and had shared that with Ben (Walden) in the past,” commented Bernsen. “Ben and I have had some big time success breeding and go back a long ways. After he and the Syndicate contacted me to help find the right situation in Australia, and after sussing out a variety of options, we concluded that Mike Becker and the Northeast (the emerging Victorian breeding community) presented the right situation for a number of reasons." Artie Schiller will stand the 2007 season at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST). |
