Exclamation NICOLE RUSSO: F-T July Sale Yearlings to Watch

@DRFRusso: Following are horses to watch during the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale, based primarily on their pedigrees and racing or auction results of notable family members. The selections reflect catalog updates and sale outs through July 5.

Hip 9, filly by Palace Malice-Passe, by Dixie Union. Consigned by Perrone Sales, agent for Apache Farm.

This is the first crop for Belmont Stakes and Metropolitan Handicap winner Palace Malice, one of the many classic standouts by Curlin. This filly is a half-sister to Wonder Gal, who won three stakes, placed in four Grade 1 events, and earned nearly $1 million. Close relative Force the Pass, a Grade 1 winner, continues to add catalog updates for the family, and this is also the family of Grade 1 winner Perfect Drift.

Hip 40, filly by Malibu Moon-Sarnsational, by Unbridled’s Song. Consigned by Blake-Albina Thoroughbred Services, agent.

By outstanding filly sire Malibu Moon, this is the second foal out of an unraced daughter of emerging broodmare sire Unbridled’s Song. The mare is half sister to I Want Revenge, a Grade 1 winner bred on the same A.P. Indy-line cross as this filly.

Hip 79, filly by Liam’s Map-Stormy B, by Cherokee Run. Consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent.

From the first crop of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map, this is a half sister to Grade 2 winner Itsaknockout, stakes winner Storm Power, and Grade 3-placed Hot Sean. It is the extended family of Kentucky Oaks winner Believe You Can.

Hip 124, colt by Tapit-With Intention, by Mr. Greeley. Consigned by Gainesway, agent.

The only offering in the sale by perennial leading sire and commercial juggernaut Tapit, whose current yearlings were his second crop conceived on a $300,000 stud fee. This colt is a half to Group 3 winner Maftool.

Hip 131, filly by American Pharoah-Yong Musician, by Yonaguska. Consigned by Select Sales, agent for Machmer Hall.

Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, from the resurgent Unbridled line, is represented by this lone offering from his first crop in the catalog after outs. American Pharoah has already been represented by two seven-figure hammer prices from his weanlings last fall and his short yearlings in January. This filly is a half sister to Peruvian Group 1-placed Kingdom Road and Grade 3-placed Co Cola. It is the immediate family of Canadian champion and Woodbine Oaks winner Kimchi and multiple Grade 1/Group 1 winner Mind Your Biscuits.

Hip 142, colt by Into Mischief-Amusingly, by Distorted Humor. Consigned by St George Sales, agent.

By a leading juvenile sire, this colt is a full brother to Grade 1-placed juvenile Dangerfield. Distorted Humor was America’s leading broodmare sire last season.

Hip 155, colt by More Than Ready-Beale Street Belle, by Tapit. Consigned by Taylor Made Sales, agent.

Beale Street Belle, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Rolling Fog, is from one of the most active families in the stud book. Cultivated by the late Edward P. Evans, her family tree includes Horse of the Year honorees Saint Liam and Gun Runner. Graded stakes performers continuing to enhance the family’s legacy include recent Grade 1 winner Funtastic, by More Than Ready.

Hip 176, colt by Violence-Classic Elegance, by Carson City. Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.

Violence was among last year’s leading freshman sires in a competitive class. Classic Elegance, a Grade 2-winning juvenile, is the dam of stakes-placed Divine Elegance and Unbridled Endeavor. She is a half sister to the dam of Believe You Can.

Hip 208, colt by Speightstown-Dream Empress, by Bernstein. Consigned by Denali Stud, agent.

Dream Empress won the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Her yearlings average $240,000.

Hip 224, filly by Shanghai Bobby-Fast Resource, by Bob and John. Consigned by Stuart Morris, agent.

Second-crop sire Shanghai Bobby is emerging as a prominent young international stallion, with Group 1 winners in Brazil, a Group 2 winner at Royal Ascot, and stakes winners in North America. This filly is from the immediate family of a prominent producer, giving her residual value. Her stakes-winning dam is out of a half sister to stakes winner Leslie’s Lady, dam of four-time Eclipse Award heroine Beholder, Grade 1/Group 1 winners Into Mischief and Mendelssohn, and two stakes producers.

Hip 230, filly by Can the Man-Five Star Daydream, by Five Star Day. Consigned by Four Star Sales, agent for Spendthrift Farm.

Can the Man is a freshman by leading juvenile sire Into Mischief. Stakes winner Five Star Day is the dam of five winners from as many starters, led by Grade 3 winner Gas Station Sushi, by Into Mischief. This is the family of Grade 1 winner Taste of Paradise.

Hip 231, filly by Strong Mandate-Fly the Flag, by Giant’s Causeway. Consigned by Denali Stud, agent.

Strong Mandate posted strong first-crop sales results, leading his class with an $825,000 yearling at the boutique Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, and then posting a $775,000 juvenile earlier this spring. Fly the Flag, out of multiple Grade 1 winner My Flag, is a half sister to champion Storm Flag Flying and three other stakes horses. This is the family of undefeated champion and blue hen Personal Ensign.

Hip 269, filly by Shanghai Bobby-Humor Me Colonel, by Colonel John. Consigned by Paramount Sales, agent.

This filly’s dam is a half sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Practical Joke. That runner is by Into Mischief, who, like Shanghai Bobby, is a son of Harlan's Holiday - making this filly bred on the same cross.
