![]() Dortmund is done with racing
By Steve Andersen ARCADIA, Calif. - Dortmund, the winner of the 2015 Santa Anita Derby and five other stakes, has run his last race. Owner Kaleem Shah said on Sunday that Dortmund has been retired and will stand at stud. It was not immediately clear whether Dortmund would stand during the current breeding season or in 2018. “Quite a few stud farms have expressed an interest,” Shah said. “Hopefully, we’ll get something done soon.” Shah said several of the farms are based in Kentucky. A 5-year-old, Dortmund won 8 of 16 starts and earned $1,987,505. He was winless in two starts at Santa Anita this year, finishing sixth in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf on March 11, and fourth in the Santana Mile on April 1. “When I saw him get beat last time, I thought that was enough,” Shah said. Dortmund was best at 2 and 3 when trained by Bob Baffert, winning the first six races of his career. He won the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity in 2014 in his final start at 2, and won his first three starts of 2015 – the Grade 3 Robert Lewis Stakes, Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes, and Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby. Dortmund was third to stablemate American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby and was taken out of training following a fourth in the Preakness Stakes. Dortmund won two stakes in late 2015, including the Grade 3 Native Diver Stakes at Del Mar, which turned out to be his final stakes win. “He’s been so good to us,” Shah said. “He had that magical run of six wins before the Kentucky Derby.” Dortmund was winless in four starts in 2016, with his best result a second to eventual Horse of the Year California Chrome in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes last October. Shah and Baffert parted ways last winter, with Dortmund and others going to Art Sherman’s stable. Dortmund is by Big Brown and out of Our Josephina, by Tale of the Cat. He was purchased for $140,000 at a 2-year-old in-training sale in May 2014.

![]() Yes.. So terribly managed that he was only 16/8-2-2 for $2,000,000 with G1 wins at 2 and 3, 5 GSW's overall..
Think how much better managed he'd have been not having to face American Pharoah and California Chrome (5/0-2-1)..

What is your point they should have backed off after the derby? Maybe? He didnt even really run in Preakness to win IMO. I dont know but he sure didnt send like he had in all his other races? Your post seems to suggest Baffert did something wrong? I do not see anything wrong based on what they did or didnt do, what are we missing? |

![]() 'Retired' Dortmund resumes training at Los Alamitos
By Steve Andersen CYPRESS, Calif. - Dortmund, the winner of the 2015 Santa Anita Derby, recently resumed training after being announced as retired in early April. Trainer Art Sherman said Thursday that Dortmund has been at his stable at Los Alamitos since the start of July. “He’s jogging a few miles a day,” Sherman said. “He’ll jog for 30 days. We’ll see what happens.” Dortmund was taken out of training in April after two disappointing races earlier this year. At the time, owner Kaleem Shah said he was discouraged by Dortmund’s sixth-place finish in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile on turf at Santa Anita on March 11 and his fourth in the Santana Mile on dirt on April 1. “When I saw him get beat the last time, I thought that was enough,” Shah said at the time. Shah said in April he hoped to complete a stallion deal for Dortmund. A 5-year-old, Dortmund has won 8 of 16 starts and earned $1,987,505. The Santa Anita Derby is the most prestigious win of his career. Dortmund was trained by Bob Baffert until the start of this year, when Shah and Baffert parted ways. Dortmund was third to American Pharoah in the 2015 Kentucky Derby and was winless in four starts last year, including a second to eventual Horse of the Year California Chrome in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes last October. Sherman said he is taking a cautious approach to Dortmund’s return to training. “Until you start breezing you don’t know, but right now he looks pretty good,” Sherman said. “We’ll keep a low profile and watch him.” Sherman will have 10 horses based at Del Mar this summer, but said Dortmund will remain with the rest of the stable at Los Alamitos.

![]() Couldn't get a good enough stud deal? Did they test his fertility and run into a problem? Hmm. I don't see a scenario where this does anything for Dortmund, but I hope I'm wrong. I was a fan of this horse from early on, not knowing American Pharoah was what he was yet. I'd rather he retire with dignity.

![]() The only thing I can think of is that Dortmund was born the wrong year.
I'm pretty sure Baffert didn't tell the jock he was supposed to lose to AP every chance he could. Dortmund just wasn't a 10 furlong colt. He may be able to get 10 now. He's matured. He's a moose. The owner wants the Derby, the BC, the biggest money races. Sorry, guy. The competition was too strong. Still is. |

![]() The fact that his sire, Big Brown, has not been a commercial success, and that Dortmund has had soundness issues, and is very large are not pluses to stud farms.
He was my Derby horse and I hope Art Sherman is able to revive his career. |
