![]() Some Yearlings to Note at Keeneland September
By Glenye Cain Oakford The Keeneland September sale’s first four days, comprising Book 1, feature dozens of yearlings with notable pedigrees. The auction begins Monday, Sept. 8, at noon with an opening session that had 175 horses in the catalog, after scratches reported as of Saturday afternoon. Among those are a number of yearlings out of grade I-winning mares who already have produced at least one stakes winner. Read about those hips in the story by Frank Angst. ANGST: Early Pedigrees to Watch at Keeneland Sale Some of the other most interesting pedigrees on offer at Monday’s opener include the following: Hip 29 - Clarkland Farm, which bred champion juvenile filly and champion 3-year-old filly Beholder, brings that filly’s half sister to two-time Horse of the Year Curlin . The daughter of stakes winner Leslie’s Lady, by Tricky Creek, also is a half sister to successful young sire Into Mischief . Hip 58 - The Lane’s End agency consigns this Street Cry colt out of graded-placed Magical Ride. He’s a half brother to Ride on Curlin, whose three grade I placings include a runner-up finish to California Chrome in this year's Preakness Stakes. Hip 59 - Peter O’Callaghan’s Woods Edge Farm, which sold last year’s $2.5 million sale-topper, offers this Bernardini —Magic Merger colt, a half brother to grade I winner Hooh Why and stakes-winner Rumbling Cloud. Hip 90 - This Benchmark colt out of the Free House mare Mo Chuisle in the Taylor Made Sales agency’s consignment is a full brother to champion sprinter Points Offthebench and to grade III winner Bench Points. Hip 108 - The Denali Stud agency consigns this Smart Strike colt on behalf of Stonestreet. He’s out of stakes winner My Miss Storm Cat, making him a full brother to champion juvenile filly and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I) winner My Miss Aurelia. Hip 122 - Baccari Bloodstock offers this Giant's Causeway half brother to Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I) victor and first-crop sire Haynesfield , a son of Speightstown . The colt is out of Nothing Special, a graded-placed stakes winner. Hip 136 - This Distorted Humor colt consigned by Brereton Jones and Airdrie Stud is a half brother to champion 3-year-old filly Proud Spell, winner of the Kentucky Oaks and Alabama Stakes (both gr. I). Hip 143 - By Gainesway stallion Tapit , who has had a stellar racing season, this colt is out of European champion 3-year-old filly Peeping Fawn, by Danehill. She already is the dam of group-placed Sir John Hawkins, this colt’s half brother. Paramount Sales consigns. Hip 149 - The Lane’s End agency’s Bernardini colt out of stakes-winner Pilfer is a full brother to two-time grade I winner To Honor and Serve. Hip 154 - Another Tapit, this one is a filly consigned by the Hill ’n’ Dale Sales agency. She’s out of stakes-winner Ponche de Leona, by Ponche, making her a half sister to Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I) winner and $5 million earner Mucho Macho Man . Hip 184 - One of four Keeneland September yearlings by powerhouse sire Galileo (Ire), this filly from the Lane’s End consignment is out of European champion and Epsom Oaks (Eng-I) winner Ramruma. That mare’s Sadler’s Wells colt, group I-placed Flying Cross, is a three-quarters brother to this filly.
