Default slippery slope

ah, the slippery slope argument...

i was just reading about obama's suggested new rules on guns, and some of the commenters said things like 'they'll take your assault weapons, next it'll be handguns and rifles'.
of course in past discussions about gay marriage, we have people talking about how gay marriage will lead to 'bigamy, marrying animals, etc'.

so, i was just wondering-does anyone know of a rule like those above being passed, that did indeed create this slippery slope and lead to more and more restrictions? i'm just curious to see if this line of logic has ever actually produced the supposed end result.

You could make a case than smoking bans may have followed that tactic, although I think it was a much more well received "slope" publicly

considering smoking is still legal, i don't know that it's an example. of course mindsets do change, and people evolve when they receive new evidence-in the case of smoking we know how dangerous it can be.

but thanks for the response!

When a repub is back as president will it be OK to put restrictions on how many abortions, a waiting period and registering each aborted fetus?

I hope not!

A slippery slope indeed.

But isn't it slippery sneaking a political thread into the eso room?

i am not responsible for whatever tangents a thread veers off into once begun...but the thread was started to see if anyone could show me when a slippery slope indeed occurred.
as for the rest of your post-it only helps elevate this thread into exactly what you're complaining about in your last sentence.

Speaking of, I saw Zero Dark Thirty last night. I really liked it, and it reminded me that any survivalist loon who thinks his stash of weaponry has a chance in hell against the US military is absolutely delusional.

I'm terrible at recognizing actors, and so during the film I was trying to figure out who one of the supporting actors. After it was over, I asked my husband and he said, "The dad character on Lost. You remember- "Waalllllt!"

Behind us, less than a minute later, I hear, except in French, the exact same conversation, complete with "Waalllllt!" Heh.

Fair enough. Remember when seatbelt laws were just an add on ticket and not a primary reason for being pulled over?

yep.
but it's another excuse for a policeman to pull you over, in hopes of finding more than a seatbelt ticket. plus, it's a revenue generator, and local and state govs love revenue generators.

That still varies state to state:

http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/l...belt_laws.html

And there's a pretty clear difference between primary and secondary seatbelt laws in terms of death and injury:

http://www.nhtsa.gov/About+NHTSA/Tra...duces+Injuries

If I were a Second Amendment zealot, I'm not sure I'd bring up seatbelt laws, seeing as how they have clearly reduced the number of deaths and injuries by automobile, without having any noticeable effect on car ownership.

(Not saying you're a SA zealot, Dell, of course. Just saying I don't think it's one that helps the "slippery slope is a bad thing" argument).
