Obama leads Romney in Virginia

RICHMOND Va. --

President Barack Obama leads Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney 47 percent to 42 percent in Virginia, and the possibility of Gov. Bob McDonnell joining the GOP ticket does nothing to close the five-point gap, a new poll shows.

Obama and Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. lead a Romney-McDonnell ticket 48 percent to 43 percent, according to the Quinnipiac University poll of Virginia voters released Thursday.

A wide gender gap remains a major obstacle for Romney in battleground Virginia. Obama leads 51 percent to 35 percent among female voters, though the president trails among men, 49 percent to 44 percent. Adding McDonnell to the ticket does nothing to change Romney's 16-point disadvantage with women.
