Default Same Old "Name"

I don't know understand why the Jockey Club, when there are so many possible names available, allows the name of a graded stakes winner to be recycled a mere 13 years after the runner retired. Same Old Wish, a 1990 foal, won the Kelso in 1996 and the River City in 1996 and 1997 on his way to over $800k in career earnings. The new Same Old Wish makes his debut on Saturday at Belmont in the 7th race. The earlier Same Old Wish was a gelding, so there is no concern about the new Same Old Wish running against sons and daughters of the old Same Old Wish. Nevertheless, this is a sport whose long history is a large part of its appeal, so I would expect its gatekeepers would do more to honor the legacies of some of its retired warriors, even if it means not making the name Same Old Wish available for a few more years.

I was talking to a friend about this earlier today. I was surprised to see the name also. Hard to believe it's been that long since the original Same Old Wish was running. I still can't believe he got up in that Kelso.

Same Old Wish once beat me out of a monster score. I believe he was on like a two year losing streak when he won an allowance race at Belmont ( it was the race before the Kelso win, I think, as he was like a new horse afterwards ). I had three horses in the race in the Pick-6 ( I think it was the 5th leg ), including a Kiaran/Shadwell shipper that was like 15:1 who finished second. Same Old Wish paid around $15 and the Pick-6 ended up paying $50K ( I had five of six ).

Bobby Barbara trained him.

Funny this topic is brought up. I just had a name rejected because there was an unraced horse circa 1990 with the same name I wanted. I called them to see if they would release it but they would not.

At least this one is a colt. Sky Blue Pink was a nice filly. She won her first five or six starts sprinting for Amoss.

If there is any justice in the world, Same Old Wish will win the last leg of a Pick 6 that pays you $100k (I've adjusted for inflation).

If "adjusted for inflation"...has the TLG now become TFM.

We've seen a couple different Piazza Di Spagana's ....

Sounds like Pizza and Speghetti in Italian.
