Default Terrible Terrible Test

What is wrong with the thoroughbred species today?

Are we to believe that there isn't one filly in the entire U.S.A. who is capable of running the last 3f of a 7f race in less than 40 seconds?

Was that supposed to be a G1 race?

Sheesh ... this game is really going to hades in a handbasket.

They came home slowly, but that was a suicidal half mile out of the gate

I thought it was terrible too. A grade 1 race shouldn't have grade 3 runners.

And what about the fillies who were 10 or 15 lengths off the fast pace?

What's their excuse?

graded races have non graded winners in their fields quite often...where else would graded winners come from? they have to get their first somewhere...

Duh.

This didn't even resemble a grade 3 field.

but you just said it was full of grade three runners, so at the very least it should have resembled a grade three field, right?

By August of a crop's 3YO year ... a G1 race should attract G1 winners ... and G2 winners ...

... not the pathetic lineup of yesterday's race.

When Gamely won the Test Stakes in 1967 ... she ran the last 3f in :36.2.

That was a race horse!

the test is another victim of owners of the 'best' being incredibly selective of where and how often to run. you can't make gr 1 winners enter. all the best up there are waiting for the alabama. also, a 7f event right now probably doesn't enter into anyone's plans of a good race to build foundation for the 9f distaff in a couple months. not when the best are already running further right now, a 7f would be a step in the wrong direction, wouldnt it?

The Test was always a 7f race for 3YO fillies run before the Alabama ...

... and it always drew overflow fields of the best fillies ... in fact ... it was almost always split into two divisions ...

... and the fields usually included all the top fillies prepping for the Alabama ... almost always including that year's 3YO filly champion.

It's simple ... the game just isn't what it used to be ... very, very few horses today who can be called professional athletes.
