Report Says Trainer Larry Jones to Quit
Updated: 12:37 PM ET (First posted: 12:28 PM ET)

According to a blog operated by turf writer John Piesen and obtained in a press release forwarded by the New York Racing Association, trainer Larry Jones has decided to stop training. The trainer of the ill-fated GI Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles as well as leading three-year-old filly Proud Spell, Jones broke the news to Piesen during a Tuesday morning phone conversation. "It's been a long, hard year," the conditioner told Piesen, "and it's taken its toll on me and my family. I've been thinking about quitting for some time now and I made the decision right after I won the Alabama with Proud Spell and the Iselin with Honest Man on the same day. I just figured, it can't get any better than this." Piesen reports that Jones has advised his major client Rick Porter of his decision and that Porter has hired Jeff Buckley, an associate of trainer Bob Holthus, to replace Jones.

edit - This piece says by the end of next year...

You have to wish him the very best. He has been a bright spot and a breath of fresh air to this sport. Seeing him work his own horses was always a delight.

This isn't really news here. It was brought out 2 weeks ago in the thread about Porter and Jones allegedly splitting up...
http://www.derbytrail.com/forums/sho...ghlight=Porter

Jones told me he wouldn't be taking on 2 year olds next year as he began cutting back.

Hegarty puts it this way in the DRF piece:

Jones considering retirement, owners say
By Matt Hegarty

Trainer Larry Jones has told his clients that he does not intend to take on any more horses and is considering retiring from training, two owners who have horses with the trainer said on Tuesday.

Ron Mitchell's version with Jones elaborating on his feelings, plan...

Trainer Jones to Retire by End of 2009
by Ron Mitchell

Trainer Larry Jones, who earlier this year saddled the winner of the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) and the following day had a filly finish second in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), said he plans to retire by the end of 2009.

“It is just time to quit,” Jones said Sept. 23. “We have been very blessed. We have reached a level that 25 years ago I never knew we could ever reach, in the caliber of horses we have and the races we won. I had the best year of my career this year. Lots of very good things have happened and lots of bad things have happened.”

He's pulling a Gary Jones! Any relations?

I'm thinking there is a lot more to this story than what he says (like getting caught doing something), but then again, I'm cynical.

he's had a hell of a year, with losing eight belles and all the subsequent media from that, and then his first and only drug positive. his wife was pretty stressed out as well, i'd imagine all that back in the spring took its toll, and probably left a bad taste in their mouths...

THis happens to alot of People in our business You simply Get burnt out. I am sure if you were to ask Cannon Shell that he has experienced some kind of burn out in his career. I get that way every year after dealing with what seems like a gazillion yearlings. Some of us deal with it better than others myself I usually take a few weeks off and my batteries are recharged.

Larry Jones has had a very stressful year with all thats went on and he has every right to be burnt out. Hopefully if he does call it quits that he can take a few months off and maybe that flame will get to burning again. Personally I don't Know Larry Jones but I do know alot of people in the game that do and everyone I talk too has nothing but high praise for him.

Ken McPeek quit training a few years ago to become a bloodstock agent. Now he is back training after "recharging his batteries". Maybe Jones will do the same.

So, he toils in relative obscurity forever and then has a breakout year and a half that catapaults him to the top of the game.

Then he quits?

Better to quit at the top of your game, no?

I suppose.

I didn't notice before he said after 2009, so I'll take back what I said.

Yes, McPeek quit. And now he's back. He really needed to "recharge his batteries".

I am going to announce my retirement soon. I think sometime after the 2038 season I will start to wind down.

LOL.

Well, I certainly hope that doesn't mean your career best year will be 2037, LOL.
