RA: "Clenbuterol is also very commonly used. It is a bronchial dilator that can be very beneficial in treating small airway disease. Horses are very prone to this problem. Let’s face it, horses live in dirty environments and they are in a profession where there is a lot of pulmonary hemorrhage bleeding. It is a drug that has been available for 25 years and we hardly ever use to see it. Now, it is the No. 1 drug in California that we deal with. The reason? The penalty structure is not enough of a deterrent. "


Actually it has been LEGALLY available in the US for 10. Maybe that is why we didnt see it. Mr. Arthur may have unwittingly just admitted to using an illegal medication in his practice for up to 15 years...

I know there were guys using it back in the early 1990s. They were importing it from Canada.

Dr. Arthur never said that he was using it back then.

Wouldnt it be logical that use would be more widespread because of its recent legality and availability as opposed to blaming it on lax penalties? Are the penalties too lenient? Probably but this is another example where something is put out there without regard to the facts. The facts are it should be more widespread once it is legal and readily available as opposed to having to smuggle it in for Canada or France or Australia or somewhere else.

The drugs that now run the sport aren't anything that veterinarians are talking about. Just like the drugs that run cycling and track and field are drugs nobody is talking about.

They are very sophisticated and impossible to test for right now.

The drugs have become so good that a 41 year old woman can become an olympic champion swimmer. The ridiculous thing is these athletes like Dara Torres and trainers like Rick Dutrow have people that believe their performances or the performances of their horses are done without "help". People believe what they want to believe.
