Default Why coupled entries need to go

The late scratch in today's 3rd of Frankel's entry meant the 2 ran for purse money only. Mind you, this is the second time in 2 years I've cashed a "winner" without actually winning- ran 2nd in both scenarios and got paid win money for picking a place horse (last year on Whitney day, a similar situation with a KMc entry and a Biancone filly ended up 2nd), but all those that would have been interested in Fast Thought would have gotten 8-1, 10-1 as a standalone interest, and they were cheated out of that opportunity first partially by being coupled with a reasonably decent mate pushing the odds down to 7/2, then completely when that mate was scratched. Coupled entries were created back in the day to eliminate trainers attempting to cash a big ticket on the "other" horse, but that was back when you could make more cashing a 30-1 ticket than actually winning the purse. Times have changed and coupled entries are no longer necessary.

I agree. I understand why they have them run for purse only but there is no reason for coupled entries.
