Default Favorite Funny Cide Memory

First, let me say I like Funny Cide. I like his owners, and I like his trainer. I think the horse was good for the sport. But he cost me a lot of money on two different occasions.

1) 2003 Kentucky Derby: I bet heavily on Empire Maker, and I made all of it back and then some on the Belmont. But still, Funny Cide cost me money thatday.

2) 2000-whatever Jockey Club Gold Cup- I had a large win bet on Newfoundland at long odds, and an NTRA National Pick 4 with Newfoundland that would have paid $2300 (I think). Newfoundland ran 2nd.

All in all, I would day that Funny Cide cost me between $4k and $5k, not considering the fact the Empire Maker's odds were inflated by Funny Cide's presence in the Belmont.

I loved his win in the Preakness, especially after the accusations in the Derby...he was a good horse who always gave his best, glad to see him retire sound and go out a winner...what stories he'll be able to tell Tagg's future runners on their way to the track!

Easily the JC Gold Cup that you speak of. Newfoundland ran a huge race that day. Funny Cide ran close to the lead with him, and fell back at the top of the stretch. Everyone (including Durkin) thought Funny Cide was done. And then he came roaring back in the stretch to win. Split Newfoundland and the Cliff's Edge in deep stretch and took the $$$. It hit that exacta... my head and my wallet wanted Newfoundland on top, but my heart wanted FC. Too bad Funny Cide got put in his place by the "zapper a few weeks later at Lone Star in the BC Classic.

derby: my picks were FC and Empire Maker, which gets me the exacta in it... and FC goes off at a good price too!

I also agree with you 100% that the owners/trainer, etc... the whole group is good for the sport.

I'm also glad to see that they're keeping him around the track.

Funny Cide is on of my favorite horses of all time. I had the trifecta in the Derby with him, plus I had money on him in the KD future wager. I bet him in all 3 pools. In the first pool he went off 99-1. My favorite race of his was the Preakness. I also got to see him at Saratoga when they had a tribute to Funny Cide day in 03'. The race I was obviously most disgusted with was the Belmont. Ever since that race the sight of Bobby Frankel & Jerry Bailey makes me sick. I never understood why when Smarty Jones went for the Triple Crown Edgar Prado & Mary Lou Whitney were apologizing for winning the race. When Empire Maker beat Funny Cide Frankel & Bailey were acting like a-holes. I thought they showed very little class that day. I hope to see Funny Cide around Saratoga again soon. He did a lot of good things for this sport.

Didn't like him at all in the Derby (N.Y.bred, gelding, no work over the track etc.) Capital OTB had a promotion that year where you could place your losing tickets (and had plenty) in a drawing for various amount vouchers for the next leg of the Triple Crown; the Preakness. Went to the Gloversville branch the next day (it was the only one open locally on Sunday) Got there 10 minutes before it was to close and didn't see the box to place the tickets in. The teller had it behind the counter and got it for me... almost missed out. The next week, I get a phone call from Capital's promotion department saying I won a voucher from the drawing. Here thinking it was for only $10 or $20, I said nice...but no big deal. When I was informed it was a $500 winning voucher, I said WOW!!! The voucher was for a win wager of that amount on the Preakness Stakes. As the days approached, I had it down between Funny Cide & Bob Baffert's runner (which the name escapes me now, but didn't run anyway). So it was Funny Cide who I placed the $500 to win on....and the rest was history. Went to the tele-theater to watch the race and in the old opening credits to their ID for the network, you could see me screaming and jumping up and down. Needless to say...I owe a lot to that "gutsy gelding"!

My favorite moment was his Preakness win. I was at Pimlico that afternoon and the excitement could not be matched in my book. Some people tend to forget that whole Miami newspaper accusation that Jose Santos had a shocking device on Funny Cide during the Derby. It was great to see the horse, jockey and connections validated when he roared off the turn and destroyed that field.

That being said, I bet against him in the Belmont! 2-1 was an amazing price on Empire Maker and that may have been the easiest money I ever made on a horse race.

I was also lucky enough to meet Funny Cide when he came to Boston for the Mass Cap a few years ago. I had a friend who knew Knowlton and a few of us were allowed to spend a few minutes in the barn with him before they shipped back to NY. Beautiful horse, but a little snippy (I would have been too, if I just lost to Offlee Wild by a neck).

FC has done alot for the game and brought plenty of fans into it, but it was time to do right by him. Hopefully, they have a little retirement ceremony for him up in Saratoga this summer.

Frankel and Bailey were being completely classless the day they won that Belmont. It was all their preconceived arrogance that they should have won the Kentucky Derby. Fact was Empire Maker was right there off FC and Peace Rules with every chance to go by and he didn't. I know they have said EM had a stone bruise or something similar, but no excuses, he had his chance.

Bailey disgraced himself further the next year by running Smarty Jones up the track and was happy to admit it. Couldn't be happier to see him off the track.

Agree with this 100%!!! They have treated this horse with the respect and love that a champion deserves. If he ends up being a showhorse,,,,*WOW* I can't even imagine the thrill some *LUCKY* one is going to get being able to show him!!

Best of luck to Funny and Sackatoga and Barclay Tagg.

The race in Canada was my favorite moment of his career. I thought he ran a hell of a race that day.

When I saw Funny Cide come back to get Empire Maker in the Wood, I knew Funny Cide was my horse in the Ky Derby. I had like $20 on his nose and I tossed Empire Faker from the exotics

oops.

Well, Funny Cide went on to run hyear after year while the cripple EM went on to

umm

filly fun

but who wants to watch that

I guess the Preakness was the best though with the record or close to records lengths won by. Santos was quick to show there was nothing in his hands... Those chumps in Florida should be ashamed

The Wood Memorial, because it was the first time I realized what a gutsy animal he was. Until that point I was a skeptic that he was truly top level, but I was right on the wire that day and FC came back at him after being passed midstretch. Great race.

I can tell you my least favorite Funny Cide memory was when I bet him strong in the Louisanna Derby, and Peace Rules went by him like he was standing still.

I thought his 3yo return race that year was sneaky awesome, in the same sort of way I felt about Giacomo's Sham Stakes loss, but I couldn't find an excuse for FC in the Fairgrounds race.

Not only did I lose a sizeable wager on the soon to be Derby winner that day, but I also held his performance that day against him in his next two outings. I had a pretty good sized Empire Maker over Peace Rules straight exacta in the Derby that year....that he had to reject.

My favorite was the Excelsior last year. He was coming off a horrendous effort in the GPH in Gulfstream and all the clowns were out on these boards again saying to hang it up. It was Migliore's first time on him and he sent him like a bat out of hell on a torrid pace letting him roll. He hung on for second running all the way and he received a Beyer well over 100 in the run. It was the start of a nice run getting on the board in that grade 3, winning the NY bred King's Point...getting on the board in the Schaefer, another grade 3 and winning the grade 3 in Canada.

...whatever...
