Default Austin, Texas

I have a job interview in Austin, Texas this week and wanted to get some input from folks here on the board that know the town. It's a great professional opportunity for me but I am a little worried about being a liberal, native Californian moving to the south... I hear Austin is not too conservative but it is in the great state of Texas (home of G. Bush) .

Any opinions would be great, and if you do recommend it, what's a good place to live if I'm going to be working south of the river?

Thanks!

One of my best friends lives there and loves it. It's supposed to be a great town if you love music (all kinds) and things to do outdoors.

It is OK if you love great music, good weather, and beautiful women. Manor Downs sucks though.

My recommendation for an early evening that is totally relaxing, go see the bats. Totally worth it, even if it sounds quite corney.

Also, try Stubbs. Always a hit...

Austin is a great town. If the job opportunity is that good, and you are mobile, go....it's that easy, I have lived all over the country and you adapt to where you are....

You hit the right town. A T-shirt you will see very often proclaims Keep Austin Weird. Clearly the most liberal cities of the big 4 in Texas. I would rank them from conservative to liberal in this order:

1. Dallas (by far the most conservative)
2. Houston
3. San Antonio
4. Austin (still highly influenced by UT so its gonna be more liberal)

I have a friend here that says he will not send his daughter to the University of Texas because its way too liberal. My daughter (the tree hugger; I hold her elementary school responsible) is set to go there after her upcoming senior year.

Thanks everyone for your input, I'm off to the airport in 30 minutes. I'll give you all an update when I get back late Friday night.

Thanks again!
