Default Derby Week Works

Thought it might be good to keep a tab of "The Works" this week at CD.

First up, Hard Spun. 5F in :57 3/5.

Geez. That seems pretty aggressive. Is that "too fast" a week before the Derby?

As long as he did it in hand, no. Smarty worked like 57 2/5 before the Derby and everybody said "oh he's cooked" blah blah blah, but as Lukas said "fast horses work fast"

Wildcat Bettie B is a pretty talented horse, likely a BC F&M Sprint contender, and if he blew her doors off like it said he did then he's ready to roll.

Thanks for the input. It says he "did it easy" so I guess I'll take his word for it.

Was it Funny Cide who worked super fast Belmont week and may have cooked himself for the race?

That's a GI winning sprinter he worked in company with today, as Philski mentioned.

Good job!

I've always found works a very useful tool.

Did you see the picture of Jones on Hard Spun? He looked like a pony under him.

Cordero, who has been the Pletcher stable’s main “work” guy throughout this winter and spring in both Florida and Kentucky, took his bay charge trackside accompanied by a pony and they first backtracked a mile at a simple jog on the Polytrack surface. After next standing for a bit at the finish line, the rider gave the signal and the colt and pony jogged the right way around to the six-furlong marker before they separated and let the Derby horse – yet another son of Distorted Humor – get on with his business.

Any Given Saturday quickly picked up the bit and moved smartly through his five-panel exercise, which clockers tabbed at :24.60, :49 and 1:01.20, with an “out” time of 1:14. What made the move all the more interesting was the fact that the veteran Cordero, following his boss’ orders, never moved his hands on the colt, never asked him for full throttle.

“He (Cordero) nailed it,” Pletcher said after as he walked back to the barn. “I wanted 1:01 today with this horse and he got it. Just what I was after following that stiff work (:58.80) he had last week. He (Cordero) is amazing. He’s been doing it right with all these horses all winter. He was doing it for us at Palm Meadows (in Florida) and now

"He’s doing it here. He can still do it after all these years. That clock in his head is still working. And he’s no chick in the spring.”

Philski,
Nobiz and Dominican both worked 5f in 59 and change. How did they look?
Thanks.

I thought it was good and what they asked of him. You can watch his work and others on the link Cajungator supplied on another thread.

Geez. That seems pretty aggressive. Is that "too fast" a week before the Derby?

The Danzig colt, who has been working at Keeneland the last two weeks, arrived at Churchill Downs at noon on Sunday, and is scheduled to debut over the track here Monday morning.

Trainer Larry Jones, who was aboard when Hard Spun galloped a mile and a half over the Polytrack at Keeneland Sunday morning, said the colt will go out to the track at Churchill right after the renovation break (8:30 a.m.) Monday and breeze five-eighths of a mile with jockey Mario Pino in the irons.

“He loved the Churchill track the last time he worked there (five furlongs in a bullet 1:01.20 on April 12), and he’s been doing well at Keeneland,” Jones said.

Hard Spun, owned by Fox Hill Farms, has not raced since winning the Lanes End Stakes (GII) at Turfway Park on March 24.

I would love to hear how sore Hard Spun looked this morning at his Keeneland work.

I'd be less concerned with the :57 3/5 if he didn't gallop out so slowly. Can anyone explain that?

Actually 13 4/5 is exactly what he should gallop out at after that work, don't be concerned by it.
