was it just the distance that beat him last week. can this guy grow into a top class or this year?

the horse is a headcase, Tagg will probably give him 3 months off no doubt

i think the Makers Mark was just a case of Showing Up being a little short WHILE catching a terrific miler in Kip Deville. KD is now 7/8 at the mile distance and he was just better than SU last Friday.

hey brock, found this on drf....

Hopes sky high for Showing Up

Tagg said that Showing Up, who lost by a neck to Kip Deville in Friday's Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland, would likely skip the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve on Derby Day and train up to the Grade 1 Manhattan on Belmont Day.

Though Tagg said Showing Up came out of the Maker's Mark "real good," he thinks the Manhattan might fit better into what he hopes is a championship campaign for Showing Up.

"If I can win a Grade 1 in New York in the spring and win another one in the fall and be lucky enough to win the Breeders' Cup, I think I'd be in good shape," Tagg said

Caught KD at Santa Anita twice at a mile. This horse has grown up and the winter training on Hollywood Parks Cushion track put a good bottom on Kip.

Take nothing away from Kip Deville, because he is no doubt a top class horse. If Showing Up had a few races into him, the outcome would have been very similar to the last time the two met. The point is that the Maker's Mark is not his ultimate objective, and it will set him up just right for the Manhattan. It was the right move to skip the Woodward, because you can't expect a horse to bounce back so quickly after such a lengthy break. Showing up looks like he might have a good year this year..It will be interesting to see who else pops to the top of the older turf division.

KD will most liking stay at the mile distance... as for SU, the B.C. Turf is his long term goal.

This is ridiculous. They are basically saying they just need to win three races to get the Eclipse. What a joke these awards have made the sport. We need some sort of points system for these awards that actually enourage top horses to run 6-10 times a year rather than just trying to get a win or two and then hoping they can win in the BC to get an Eclipse award.

well, i hope he runs in more than just those three. doesn't look good tho, does it. waiting til june for race #2 of the year....
hey, worked for ghostzapper, so i guess any horse who wins half a handful of races can win a year-end award.

You have to figure Tagg, being a very conservative horseman usually, will run him in the Manhattan, Arlington Million, Man O'War or Hirsch at Belmont, then BC Turf. Wins in each of those races earn you an Eclipse, no doubt about it. It is a shame though that few run any more than that.

Maybe I'm one of the few who think Showing Up will not be successful at 12 furlongs, especially against Europeans. I just don't think 12 furlongs is his game. I give him a pass for the loss in the Man O'War last year since he was only 3 and facing elder, but he didn't look like he wanted that kind of distance.
