Default Lost in the Fog and Northern California Racing

GREAT article in Blood Horse (http://news.bloodhorse.com/viewstory.asp?id=35485)... I fell in love with racing at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields, yet I was always told that the "real" racing takes place on the East Coast and that West Coast horses just can't compare to the mighty thoroughbreds of the East... That may be true in some instances, but my reply is, we had Lost in the Fog. He was "our" horse at those little tracks in northern California, and he was a great horse who was owned and trained by two great men who believe in northern California racing.

I still miss this horse... I have a picture of him in my office at work and when people ask about my "horse picture", I say, "I loved that horse. That's Lost in the Fog... one fastest horses horses I've ever seen in my life. He made running fast look easy."

I hope you enjoy the article.

p.s. I LOVE that the track under my name right now is Golden Gate Fields

Derby Cat,

I was also a fan of Lost in the Fog and was lucky enough to see him run three times, Bayshore, Riva Ridge and BC Sprint. Each time I was lucky enough to have my camera with me.

Here is a picture of LIF winning the Bayshore.

I hope you enjoy it.

I couldn't agree with you more. I will always wonder how good he could have become if he didn't get sick. His modest background and connections made him easy to root for. It used to bother me when the so called experts would say "I told u so" after his first defeat. I found myself defending him whenever I heard the "he hasn't faced anyone" argument. I liked this horse too much to even think he was anything but great. I couldn't be impartial because I was too much of a fan of his. Thanks for the link to that article.

I hate the "he didnt face anyone" agruement. I think no one came to race against him. He competed in different states, at different distances and flew all over the place. To me, he went to the races and raced. He didn't sit back and wait for the perfect race. He was truly special.

He was "lightning in a bottle" and was taken too soon...saw him win the King's Bishop and saw his only bad effort in the BC Sprint. The video tribute done for him at Bay Meadows was great...brought a tear to my eye.

I hadn't looked at it the first time around, but YES it is.

I had a program today at the OTB and still pleasantly noted the Golden Gate Fields track record holder for 6 1/2 furlongs.

Yup, I miss him too, I felt bad after I found out that he had those tumors, I had jumped off his bandwagon a little bit, I still loved the horse and believed that he was really good, but I thought that maybe he just can't beat top competition. I think that I was wrong, I remember watching the replay on the Sam Spear show when he broke his maiden and then when he tourched them at Turf Paradise winning his first stakes. I'm hoping that Vicarino will carry on Fog's legacy, everyone keep an eye out for him.

Bigjag - Welcome to Derby Trail, good to have another person that appreciated Northern California racing... Do you go to Bay Meadows or Golden Gate often?

Hey derbycat, thanks for the nice words. I've actually been around alot, but don't post much anymore, I used to post under a different handle over on the espn.com board. Anyways, I grew up around Bay Meadows, but now I live in Fairfield so I go to our local simulcast at Vallejo, they have the Solano County Fair there. I haven't been out to BM or GGF in about a year but i've spent alot of time there. I Can't wait for BM to start up again so I can play some Friday's alive cards. lol
