betting ? after the weekend

i am staring to wonder if it makes more sense that if you like a horse to win at say 6-1 should a decent bet may be to just bet 10w and then spend the rest on trying to really hit one out of the park. The reason i ask is that betting straight it doesn't matter if you bet 2,100 or 500 the rate of your retun on your investment is going to be the same. Doesn't it make sense to go deeper in some exactas or tris to really get a good ticket? i have been basiclaly betting 10w5p and then maybe a $1 exacta with 4-5 horses above my horse and .50 tris with same 4-5 horses over same 4-5 horses over my pick. Now i am not a big bettor wiht my MAX being maybe 50 on one race but any advie would appreciated. thanks.
