Good hopefully he gets the max.

And hopefully they keep Gov Ryan(R) IL in until that fossil of a wife of his dies. Then maybe the Willis children can be a bit redeemed!

Delay is convicted. What is going to be done with DeLay's fellow piece of trash Rangel. All I have heard is him being censored or I guess that is the Congressional way of slapping him on his hand and saying don't do that again. What happened to Pelosi's talk of ethics? If Rangel was a Republican the Democrats would want that individual out of office. If it was anyone else that person would be in jail for not paying taxes. I guess the Democrats are still trying to set a great example for us to follow. November was a great result for the Democratic party. Maybe they will wake up and realize the American public is sick of how they are conducting business. I know all the Democrats will say that the Republicans aren't doing much better.

They aren't. IL has a governor (Ryan) Republican who was indirectly responsible for burning children alive, similar to Janet Reno. My hope is he dies in jail and his widow finally runs out of oxygen, a blissfull, loving, couples death. RENO well she's always lived with ugly.

Rangel should be in a lot of trouble with the IRS. His fellow legislators should be the least of his problems.

If it was you or me we would already be in jail for failure to pay taxes. How does this worthless SOB get away with it?

Probably his age (80) is helping him stay out of prison. That, and he has the resources to pay back what he owes. A lot of the people we see go to prison (for tax reasons) simply knowingly tried to get away with not paying tax on millions of dollars of income. Did he do what Wesley Snipes did?

You commit a crime you should serve the punishment regardless of age. Didnt Rangel go multi years without paying taxes? Why should he get a break and not go to prison?

Most of the stuff he got caught doing was accepting favors (campaign donations..free trips etc.) from people that would later come before his committee etc. He also got caught paying highly reduced rental rates. Some of the favors were donations for a foundation in his name. It's ethics stuff. It was abuse of power. I guess the reason it's not being prosecuted (yet,) is because they can't prove a quid pro quo. He also didn't pay tax on rental properties in the Dominican Republic. He now paid those taxes. He didn't pay property tax on some property in New Jersey. He's now paid those taxes. I think the total of these taxes due was from $10-20k. I think tax evasion requires more than just not reporting income. They need to prove that these 3 things below are present, and what he did must not have risen to the level of tax evasion.

1) that an unpaid tax liability exists
2) that there was affirmative action (not just an omission or failure to act) in an attempt to evade either the assessment of a tax or the payment of a tax
3) that the defendant possessed the specific intent to evade a known legal duty to pay the tax

I know if we did that stuff, then, we'd pay a lot of penalties. Not just have to pay the tax.
