![]() The pathetic loser from the BlueGrass may still enter:
From Brisnet, com: CHARITABLE MAN (Lemon Drop Kid), seventh in last Saturday's Blue Grass S. (G1) in his first start in seven months, is scheduled to return to the track Wednesday morning, according to Neal McLaughlin, assistant to his brother Kiaran. "He is going to train in the morning and we are going to see where we are with him," McLaughlin said. "He came out of the race fine and cooled out quick. We are going to keep our options open." With $150,000 in graded stakes earnings, Charitable Man may have enough in the bank to earn a spot in the Kentucky Derby (G1) starting gate. "The owners may want to go over to Churchill Downs and see how he trains over there and have a work there," McLaughlin said. Charitable Man defeated Friesan Fire in the Futurity S. (G2) at Belmont Park last season. |

![]() I get it. So dozens of Grade 1 horses can flop horrendously on the Keeneland polytrack, but Charitable Man is a pathetic loser when he does so off of a 12-year layoff. Glad we cleared that up.

He was placed in an absurdly difficult and unprudent spot last time. Whoever has been calling the shots with him deserves the mocking more so than the horse |

![]() I will revise my thoughts.....he'll never make it to the King's Bishop.
It's too bad, as he might be a pretty talented horse. We'll never know.

![]() In unrelated news, I've decided to run in the Boston Marathon next week. I haven't run farther than a mile in ten years, and slowed to a walk on a trip around the block, but I should be fine with my strong preparation this weekend of sitting on the couch drinking beer.

![]() Kiaran McLaughlin happened to sit at my table for breakfast in Dubai back in March and we were the only English-speakers at the table, and we were talking about Mr. Fantasy. They had just had a conference call with the West Point folks about his prospects and going forward following the Gotham and he said the following with some slight paraphrasing...
"Owners get Derby fever, and while I understand that, you have to do everything you can to give em the best chances to be successful going forward. It's not easy to have that conversation." You just know he's gotta be hating every second of it, but if the owners strong arm him and have the fever, what else is he gonna do - I'm sure he's trying. |

![]() “It’s a very, very tough task to ask a horse to win a grade I off a seven-month layoff, especially a 3-year-old,” said McLaughlin. ...
“Ideally, we would have found a seven-furlong, non-winners of two for (Charitable Man), but this is what we were left with. We could have run him on April 4, but (the Keeneland Polytrack) is a kind surface. We felt like this was a good spot. “But the main thing is, we wouldn’t have put him in here if we didn’t think he was a very special horse.” Which leaves the door open, I would think, for a SPECIAL THOROUGHBRED OLYMPICS. ![]() Maybe even have races for SPECIAL trainers and jocks, as well. Kiaran, the visionary. |
