Default Into Mischief

I know it has been talked about on here before, but the decision to stand Into Mischief for the 2009 season is just crazy. I just can't see the interest in this horse after only 5 career starts, especially at $10K. I just think he has alot left to prove. I know he was a Gr. I winning 2YO but come on!

He looked somewhat impressive in the Damascus even though he didn't beat too much, it WAS only his first start back since February! I just can't see breeders knocking the doors down to get to this guy. With any luck, he could improve his stallion credentials as a 4YO, especially since he is obviously sound as of right now.....any thoughts?

Seriously, someone is standing Into Mischief? This isn't a joke?

He can try to improve those credentials in the Gr. I Malibu before the year's out. That would make him kind of a 2 and 3 year old season only version of Rock Hard Ten. Don't forget that Mischief did win the Gr. I Futurity last year. A Malibu win would make him a Gr. I winner at 2 and 3 which would be pretty OK when stacked up to the rest of Hughes' stallions at Spendthrift.

Being by Harlan's Holiday is probably part of the concept here too. Get him out there as a cheaper alternative to his pop, who was $25k last year and likely is due for a small increase for '09. Figure Into Mischief starts out at maybe $7,500?

This is from Steve Andersen's article about Santa Anita cutting winter purses on DRF:

"Into Mischief not done yet

Into Mischief, the winner of the Damascus Stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday, may remain in training as a 4-year-old in 2009, a reversal of owner B. Wayne Hughes's recent plans for the colt.

Hughes is considering sending Into Mischief to stud, but said a decision has been postponed until after the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds over seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. The Damascus Stakes was run over seven furlongs for 3-year-olds.

"I think we'll go to the Malibu," Hughes said in the winner's circle. "If he were to win that, we could run another year. We haven't made a final decision."

In the Damascus, Into Mischief was fifth early and rallied three wide to take the lead in the final furlong. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Into Mischief won by two lengths over pacesetter Dancing in Silks, timed in a quick 1:20.38.

"That was an awesome performance, he really was galloping" at the finish, Hughes said.

Georgie Boy, the 7-5 favorite, finished fourth in his first start since March.

Into Mischief has won 3 of 5 starts and $547,080. Trained by Richard Mandella, Into Mischief was sidelined from February until the Damascus Stakes because of foot injuries."

I can tell you from being there he kicked away from the field nicely and really looked sharp.

WOW!! How retarded is BWH, after all the money he spends year after year at the sales, he finally gets a runner who is primed to make some noise in what is bound to be a weak handicap division next year.

This game is so a$$ backwards. We don't breed to race, we race to breed.

You are SO right. What makes me laugh is his idea that if the horse doesn't win, he retires. Logically, if the horse doesn't win, he would need to race some more to improve his credentials for stud and his eventual fee. It's not like Harlan's Holiday over Tricky Creek is the height of fashion and would command top fees.

I'm sorry, I don't care if the horse won a GI as a 2YO, I just couldn't figure out a way to justify retiring the horse when there will surely be other sons of Harlan's Holiday out there to hit the shed in the near future who will have exceptionally superior credentials than does Into Mischief.

HH has already surpassed what I expected from him as a sire.
Harlan isnt exactly a sire of sires. Menifee has just been ok.

It was just posted in bloodhorse.com that the Malibu will be his final start, and both he and Tiz Wonderful will stand for 12,500 next year at Spendthrift.

Without starting a new thread, can we add the retirement of the sound GII winning 3YO Ready's Image who has made a whopping 10 starts!

It was a joke chit head, and I think anyone who can take a couple thousand dollars and turn it into 4.7 billion is way freakin smarter than you or I.
Secondly , I dont want to see the horse retire I ride him everyday and he is doing better than ever , but he is not my horse and its not my call . The good thing is that Wayne keeps buying and racing and breeding and pumping millions of dollars into this industry , so if he decides to retire HIS horse or ride him in a parade Im sure he will buy more .

Hey I havent seen (Buddy) Pres. Cause around since Oneil ran him back a few times after the claim ,I wonder whats up with him.
PP , I dont want Wayne to retire Into Mischief and even though he has announced it again , he told me in the paddock before the race after I asked him about the retirement that pretty much he is open to changing his mind at anytime with the horse , so.... I have heard talk around the barn that we could be looking at the Cigar Mile in between now and the Malibu , dont know if it wil happen but I would venture to say that if he wins that race , jus maybe he wont be retired. Im crossing my fingers.
