Default triple crown for older

Whirlaway is the only horse to have swept the Triple Crown and Grand Slam. Travers being the 4th leg of the Grand Slam.

The Triple Crown needs to be rescheduled to the first Sat. in May, June, July. The Travers can stay where it is, completing the almost impossible Grand Slam. IMO only.

Actually the last leg of the Grand Slam is the Breeders Cup Turf. The Grand Slam of Grass begins this weekend, then the VA Derby, then the Secretariat at Arlington and the last leg the BC Turf. $5 million bonus if you sweep all 4

Well that is super. If the turf horses have such a cool thing the 3 year olds can too culminating with the Travers...

I hope one of the bidders for the 3 NY tracks increases the purse of the Travers to $2,000,000 and offers a $5,000,000 bonus to any horse that wins the Triple Crown and Travers. The GRAND SALAMI for 3 year olds.

That is a great idea. Pretty funny but you could win the triple crown and the travers and the winner of the turf grand slam makes more (until you factor in breeding).

I like the idea BUT...without something similar for older horses, nobody would race after their three year old season. We need a series for four and up...maybe the Big Cap, the DWC, the HGC or JCGC and the BCC?

i wouldn't include the DWC. offer a big wknd here to compete with that one, that kind of $ would draw the best here. besides, than no one would have to ship so far and lose their horse for months afterward.

there used to be a fall 'triple crown' the marlboro, woodward and jcgc....they need to get moving on a racing series like what has been mentioned for the last several years.

what this sport truly needs is ONE governing body. i hate to make the comparison, but they need something like NASCAR. level playing field countrywide, with rules covering all tracks, etc.

agreed. i thought i changed title of this thread. the older need their tc more than the 3s need a salami although Whirlaway is da Boss.

how bout the Stephen Foster, Whitney, and Woodward for the tc for older? with a nice bonus thrown in for the sweep.

That sort of thing would have a tough time coming out of any national racing organization. How are you going to get the tracks that are left out to agree? I don't see anyway to pick 3 races and try to give them elevated status above the other Grade I's. The Calif tracks would scream, as would Gulfstream and others.

The only way something like that could happen would be for 2 or 3 tracks to put it together themselves. They could link 3 races with a bonus for the sweep and a bonus for "most points", based on some criteria.

I wish something like that would happen. In the meantime, thank heavens for the Breeders Cup.

That is what is wrong with the Breeders Cup when it comes to older horses. Trainers point their horses to the BCC and that is it. Heck, Flower Alley hasnt even raced yet, Ghostzapper didnt even make his debut until the Met Mile a year ago.

Having a bonus tied into certain races doesnt work for older horses. They have tried that and no one is interested. The money they would get is nothing to what they will get in breeding. Why race your horse is a 3 race series against other top horses when your main goal is to get your horse perfect for the BCC?

As for 3 year olds, the proper way to do a bonus is to make sure you get the top talent. Lets say you use the Travers as the last leg of the series. You could say that any horse to win a Triple Crown race and the Travers is elibigle for a $5mm bonus. Any horse who finishes 2-4th in any Triple Crown and wins the Travers is eligible for a $3mm bonus. I think trainers would go for something like this. You have to make the bonus attractive to multiple horses. Lets take this year for example.

Bluegrass Cat
Jazil
Bernardini
Steppenwolfer
Hemingways Key
Sunriver
Sweetnorthernsaint
Brother Derek

What you have done is made the Travers very attractive to multiple horses instead of just one. But this will never happen, because bonuses do not work.
