BRIDGMOHAN: Out Indefinitely

Apprentice rider Jermaine Bridgmohan, fresh from smashing records and winning the jockey title at the recent Tropical at Calder meeting, will be sidelined indefinitely with multiple injuries sustained in a serious fall Wednesday at Gulfstream Park.

Thrown from 5th race mount Toms Mulligan, Bridgmohan suffered a broken collarbone and wrist, 2 broken ribs and a punctured lung, all on his right side according to Calder-based trainer Kim Graci. The accident occured on the first turn of the meet's first turf race, when the Robert Barbara trainee mistepped entering the backstretch while mid-pack and closest to the rail.

Toms Mulligan did not fall in the incident, but the younger brother of veteran pilot Shaun Bridgmohan pitched forward to the right with the stumble, and into the path of several trailing horses which appeared to trample the Jamaican native.

Transported to Regional Memorial Hospital in Hollywood, FL, where he remains and is resting comfortably, Bridgmohan never lost consciousness. The 18-year old entered the high profile Gulfstream season having set a mark for wins at the recently concluded Calder Fall-Winter meet and was the only rider named to a mount in every race on the card.

Jeez that's rough. These guys are nuts to ride. If I break my pinky toe I'm on the couch for a month.

I hope he recovers quickly. I only have watched him a couple of times but he seems to have immense talent. We have some really nice young jocks out there.

the best thing going for him is his age. Can you imagine say Earlie Fires trying to recoup from these injuries?

didn't somebody say this kid shouldn't be allowed to ride on the turf? i swear i read somebody post that. said the kid was a danger out there. needed to stay on the dirt until he learned a thing or two.

I hope that he has the fastest of recoveries. Injuries like these are not fun.

The big grey thing you see me jumping in my avatar reared up, fell over sideways, and rolled over me once. I'm lucky I didn't die.

I still have nerve damage from the injury and am about 80% in my left leg and 90% in my right. Both of my hips weren't attached to my body (they hadn't moved out of place though so I didn't have to have surgery), my tail bone was broke down the middle, I broke two ribs on either side, broke my left shoulder, punctured lungs, and had severe nerve damage. My sciatic nerve was severed.

That horse has took me to both hell and heaven on Earth though. I still love him. I was back on him three months after my injury, but it took about six months before I could ride without any pain, and about a year to where I could post without stirrups again.

Am I the only one looking forward to her post that details her accident worse than a broken collerbone, broken wrist, two broken ribs AND a punctured lung?

And I see you didn't disappoint.

Quite impressive. Not sure why you wouldn't still love your horse. It wasn't his fault.

Sounds awful...

I've been lucky... had two bad falls (one where my grey rolled on me and broke my tailbone OUCH) and one where I fell onto a jump. Besides my back problems, I have never had serious injuries. Horses are very dangerous. Worth it to me, but still dangerous.

Crickey, being trampled in a paddock was bad, but nothing like this. Pretty horse by the way.

I remember my first fall the most...it took forever to hit the ground. My pony bolted and every few strides I lost a stirrup and rein. I seriously just wanted to get it over with, but couldn't imagine employing the skills you are taught in learning to fall, so instead I landed on my neck.

12 hands may not be very big, but when you're meeting the ground it seems a very long trip!

I slipped on the way to the windows once and skinned my knee....but don't worry.....I still got all my bets in and was thus able to continue to fund the game.
