Warren Mehrtens
Just saw actor D.B. Sweeney offer up a little Triple Crown trivia on Twitter. Apparently his uncle was Warren Mehrtens, jockey of Triple Crown winner Assault. He tweeted that he was very proud of that fact. He also mentioned that Mehrtens was the only TC winning jockey not in the Hall of Fame.
He had 614 wins and $3.5 million in purses earned. Also the filly Dark Discovery whom I wasn't familiar with but she's an interesting little thing, trained by Max Hirsch who also trained Assault, beating Alsab in the Gallant Fox Handicap at 4 and finishing in the money against horses like Whirlaway, Princequillo, Vagrancy, Stefanita, Market Wise, and Level Best. Probably one of those fillies you'd be a little fond of seeing.
