![]() They now have the lowest win takeout in all of North America.
http://www.drf.com/news/woodbine-low...in-wagers-1495 Good competition going on in Canada. The Western Canadian track Hastings Park recently cut WPS takeout to a North American best 15%. Woodbine is far and away the class track of Canada, they did wait a year or two, but they ultimately did the competitive thing and undercut Hastings. The place and show takeouts at Hastings remain a North American best 15%. |

![]() Everyone knows who the class tracks are.
Sam Houston is not one of them. They used to be a complete joke. Terrible horses, very small betting pools, no slots money, poor equipment, terrible morning lines etc. Not much has changed in that regard, the racing program has become a lot better and the pool sizes have increased, but still no slots, and they have enough trouble just timing a race...not to mention the morning line maker is still clueless. However, Sam Houston does have 12% takeouts on all multi-win wagers (Daily double, P3, P4, and Pick 5) and with a 50-cent entry point. You also get occasional carryovers to work with. No one is going to make anything close to a living by betting on Sam Houston ... but it's one of the easiest tracks to show a profit at. Woodbine never would have cut their win takeout if Hastings didn't do it first. I know some of the class tracks are handcuffed, but those rankings should be used as a way to help them convince the politicians that their draconian takeout rates should be shaved. Freddy, wouldn't you like to bet Pick 4's with a 12% takeout and 50-cent entry point at the big tracks? The 50-cent entry point takes withholding out of the question and reduces IRS paper work ... you're MUCH better off having your winning P4 twice for 50cents than once for a dollar. |

The horses might need two extra seconds to run a mile, and a few more of the jockeys might be brain dead, but the horses are no less consistent, they're just a little slower. If you bet on them and win, the money they give you is the same US currency and it spends the same. If you bet on them and lose, you lose the same kind of money. The pools aren't exactly microscopic ... they bet $1.33 million a day on Sam Houston races. The purses are $170,000 a day. They even have a turf course and use it. It's certainly not dog racing pools, but yeah, you can't send it in strong without hurting your odds. The legitimate knocks on Sam Houston revolve around its crappy equipment and the fact that the morning line maker is the most laughably incompetent one in America. When the timer routinely malfunctions and the morning line maker routinely makes obvious favorites 12/1 on the morning line...people have a right to not take that kind of track seriously. |

![]() I LOVE betting Sam Houston. There doesn't seem to be a great deal of sophisticated money in the pools there, and logical horses are decently priced with a little bit of research. Not every race, but an awful lot more frequently than the larger circuits.

![]() There are many good reasons for WO to have lowered take out on Win wagers.....competition with Hastings?.....I don't think they sit around the boardroom at WEG and worry very much about Hastings. There are much bigger fish to fry.....
Take out was lowered because WO has to attract more handle...they have to make up the difference between what was being delivered previously by the Ontario government and now.
