there's a solid 15-20% of the egyptian populace that supports a theocracy. it's probably just a little less than exists here but it's better organized after 60 odd years of incompetent repression. pre-revolution egypt was no north korea.

the vast majority of american aid to egypt goes to the military which is the one institution that has nearly universal support. it's the glue holding the country together right now.

if we want to act against our own long term national interests we could walk away. and watch the better organized minority take over.

but that would be like cutting spending during the worst recession in any of our lives. no responsible adult would do either.

You do realize the protest was originally planned to protest the interim MILITARY government.

This part

But the turnout was lopsided, dominated by members of religious movements, ranging from the most conservative, the Salafists, to the relatively moderate Muslim Brotherhood.

Send the senior citizens their checks. If there's money left over (there's not!) then worry about Egypt. And a responsible adult does in fact cut spending during a recession. In fact they may even go so far as reducing everyday necessities like gas and electricity. Would be nice if the government did the same but this administration is the opposite of responsible and hence we're 3 days away from not being able to pay bills. At least we have the fond memories of Cash for Clunkers etc.

What I find very strange is the fact the average overpaid government employee, congressmen and senators included, apparantly have no threat of not being paid or even having pension checks delayed, while seniors who have actually contributed money all their working lives (only to have it replaced by IOU's in a Ponzi-like scam)and those fighting for the country are Obama's first targets.

Reuters) - Six Americans working for publicly funded U.S. organizations promoting democracy in Egypt have been barred from leaving the country, provoking angry demands in Washington that Cairo's new military rulers stop "endangering American lives".

Among those hit by travel bans - one of those targeted called it "de facto detention" - is a son of U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, as well as other foreign staffers of the International Republican Institute and National Democratic Institute, officials at the two organizations said.

Shortly after dropping his bags at the White House, President Obama was en route to Cairo Egypt for his inaugural foreign trip where he praised the cultures, architecture, inventions and music the Arab people have contributed to mankind.

A year later he assisted with the overthrow of the government, both monetarily and with encouragement, promising a free, democratic Egypt. At the time, The Muslim Brotherhood declared publicly they had no aspirations to hold office and with the exception of a female reporter being sexually assaulted by multiple perpetrators and Cooper Anderson slapped, everything looked rosy.

Skip ahead another year. The Muslim Brotherhood has reneged on its declaration, is in power politically and is seeking control over the military. Instead of a thank you, the newly freed, democratic, theocratic Mecca of the Arab Spring has taken 19 Americans as hostage and issued warnings to the U.S. not to interfere.

Perhaps because it’s a campaign year the media has remained agnostically mum on this one preferring to cover an accidental suicide 24/7. The two girls detained in North Korea received more coverage in a single day than these 19 have gotten in two weeks. More curious is the President’s limp, impotent effort at negotiation; threatening to cut off aid.

At best the President is naïve at worst complicit.

With Iran rattling their swords at us daily one must pause and ask is the new Egypt, specifically the Muslim Brotherhood more or less likely to side with Tehran than the old Egypt?

I wonder if the President’s incompetence for foreign policy bleeds over into his personal life and he doles out payoff money to his two daughters to keep schoolyard bullies at bay?

Yeah it's not like the President before him was COMPLETELY incompetent on foreign relations and the one before him and the one before him and so on and so forth.

Do you just automatically assume that past involvement ends once a new President takes office?

GTFO with this nonsense. Like Romney or Sanitorium will be any better with Muslims.
