Default Vote on Boehner bill starting

Debate has started on Boehner's bill. Questions remain as to if he can even get enough votes within his own caucus to pass it. Doubtful.

If he does pass it, Reid said the Senate will vote it down late tonight. Boehner knows the Senate will not vote in favor of it (they sent him a letter yesterday as he insisted upon pursuing it), and the President said he would veto it.

Thanks, Speaker, for being held hostage by the loons in your party. And saying today that you have no control over if our credit rating is downgraded.

Default Breaking - vote delayed, not enough votes

Well, you can watch this whole debacle on CSpan. http://www.cspan.org/Events/House-Ex...10737423142-7/ Love how they schedule this crap for after the US markets close.

And if you're trying to follow along, they are now passing bills naming Post Offices while Boehner tries to round up votes for a bill that won't pass the Senate. Because that's what's most important right now.

Quote:
WASHINGTON -- House GOP leadership announced abruptly on Thursday evening that they were suspending a vote on Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) debt ceiling proposal, signaling in the process that the GOP lacked the votes to pass the package.

The news came just minutes before party leadership was set to hold a 5:30 p.m. vote on the proposal, which would cut roughly $915 billion in spending over the next ten years but only raise the debt ceiling through the end of the calendar year.

Congressional aides were scrambling to figure out just when the vote would be rescheduled for -- the House for now will consider eight smaller measures first -- but a spokesman for House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said that a vote on Boehner's proposal would still take place on Thursday night.

Whether that is enough time for the Speaker to convince a few more Republicans to support him is unclear. Informal whip counts had 25 Republicans and the full Democratic caucus opposing the measure, which would put it short of the 216 votes needed for passage.

The bill's delay, and the continued unlikelihood of its passage, gave Democrats yet another hook to argue that the entire enterprise was fruitless. As one aide emailed, with respect to Boehner's bill: "we're wasting precious time so he can twist more arms for a bill that is dead [in the Senate]."

It's not even close to responsible and shouldn't be passed by the house. New bill sent to Obama and the Senate should simply state GFY! Let the Ponzi cards fall. Better now than later.

Yes, it is a complete waste of time.

The House loons control 47 votes of the Republican caucus. Boehner can't even get to 217 within his own overwhelming majority. The House loons have already torpedoed two previous tentative agreements last week.

They are nihilists (although I think 3 have "changed sides" today, citing "being told the facts" - where have they been this past week?).

Michelle Bachmann again today said she'll never vote for a debt ceiling increase, saying it's all a lie that we'll be in trouble and not be able to pay our debts.

This is what democracy looks like sometimes.

Default And it's off ... maybe

And ... it's postponed, House in recess. They may still vote tonight. Boehner is meeting with members individually (begging).

Begging try and get them to vote for a bill that won't pass the Senate and that the President will veto.

This is a huge waste of our time and money. This incompetence is so angering. Just take a damn clean debt ceiling vote, like you guys have the previous 79 times, then spend all the time you want on cuts to spending and revenue deals. After all, there is a new budget coming up.

The vote to pass House Speaker John Boehner's (R-OH) debt ceiling bill has been postponed while Boehner meets with his members individually. The vote could still take place this evening. Earlier today, the House passed the rule along party lines (238-186) for House Speaker Boehner’s plan to lift the debt ceiling.

Speaker Boehner released a revised version of his proposal Wednesday evening, which cuts $917 billion dollars of spending over ten years.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) said that should the House pass Boehner's bill, the Senate will vote to table - or discard - the measure this evening.

The ceiling is high enough and already takes too much money to keep up.

Time to scale down, quickly, before Christmas.

Break all those piggy banks and find the it's there.

So you're saying we shouldn't pay for things that Congress has already passed laws saying we will pay for?

We shouldn't pay for things we've already bought?

And somehow, magically, not paying your bills isn't "default"? And not paying for things that by law we are required to pay for isn't breaking our own law?

Explain how that works. Let me get some popcorn

No we should reconsider and prioritize what congress has passed and decide what is the least and most needed. The money is there. Social Security from now on should be financed with actual T-bills, not IOU anything.

Shame on Obama for wasting the senior citizens' retirement money on things like buying and destroying used cars and giving away WI money it refused. Seniors wake up!!!

You'd better contact the Treasury Secretary and let him know. He seems to think differently.

Here: you pick what we should not pay. Need to delete about 1/3 of it:
Social Security
Medicare and Medicaid
Government employee salaries
Military salaries
Government contractors payments for things we bought

Social Security should be seperated and privatized. It should no longer serve as a lending agent for Fed giveaway programs. SSI is a completely different animal and anyone not having worked a legit job (contributed) should not be eligble to collect. Those requiring support that had not made any contributions should be moved and addressed under welfare and charity programs.

Military salaries are untouchable.

Government contractors that have completed work and or delivered goods should be paid.

Government employees could be reduced by 50% easy including congressional staffing! Privatize any necessary jobs and say goodbye to pension and healthcare obligations. Those that remain should have pay frozen and like most of the private world, contribute to their pension and healthcare accounts.

Medicare can be reduced by 10% (fraud) and Medicaid patients should check into the local county hospital as the country no longer is in the position to finance their private care.

In addition we need to stop supporting/subsidizing Fannie and Freddie and like I said before seperate completely from the USPO. All hi-speed train fund giveaways need to be returned. What's sad is how much money was wasted already and can't be retrieved. (My town purchased a high tech golf cart for parking control under the guise of homeland security LOL) GM and all of the banks need to repay ALL the money loaned plus interest or face fines starting now. Egypt, Pakistan etc etc should be cutoff completely and be on the hook for any money owed not have debts forgiven.

Ultimately once the above is done, taxes on (EVERYONE) can be raised provided that those new taxes are used exclusively to pay down the debt and obviously cut interest payments. No one should pay no taxes while others pay over a 1/3 of their income. We have lived it up long enough. Tough times are ahead but think of what bond rating we'd get if instead of passing a new debt ceiling we actually started paying down the debt!

If you personally were broke, to the point of not having enough to make your next mortgage payment, would you still buy a $100,000 Mercedes you committed to buy, however irresponsibly, or would you find a way to cut your losses?

Joey, we are nowhere near broke. We do not have any "crisis". This is all manufactured BS.

We have to, by law, stated in the Constitution, pay the bills we've already incurred. The debt ceiling is just cash flow to do that. Has zero to do with future spending.

We need a single sentence raise the debt ceiling bill, then the Congress can go crazy creating committees to decrease our spending and increase our revenues.

None of that has anything to do with raising the debt ceiling.

Default Boehner bill vote in about 45 minutes

@LukeRussert: Update: House #GOP floor Whip team says final vote on #Boehner #debt bill now between 5:45-6:15pm.

Edit: they are voting right now, 6:10 eastern live coverage: http://www.cspan.org/Events/House-to...10737423174-2/

Edit: Boehner bill passes with one extra vote 218. No Democratic votes, 10 abstaining. Now it goes to the Senate tonight to die**

Thanks for 2 days of wasting our time, House Republicans, now can we just raise the debt ceiling with a simple one-sentence bill, and then work on jobs and the economy?

** Actually McConnell and Reid are working on compromise bill to try and pass tonight.
