ONNECTIONS of Japanese superstar Deep Impact believe the colt has improved ahead of his planned run in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. The four-year-old has lost only one of his 11 starts to date and has won over distances ranging from 1m2f to 2m in Japan. The son of Sunday Silence delighted trainer Yasuo Ikee when working over the big-race trip of 1m4f furlongs at Longchamp on Wednesday. He covered the final 400 metres in 21 seconds, impressing Ikee and the group of around 100 journalists who turned up to watch. "I'm very surprised how many people turned up just to watch him work," said Ikee. "It was a good workout, blessed with good weather and the track conditions were perfect. "His training is going according to schedule, exactly the same as it would be over in Japan. "We must thank the people who are looking after us in France (Carlos Laffon-Parias). It has made for a good preparation for the Arc. "Deep Impact covered the last half a mile in 50 seconds, which is what we would want him to. "He is now much better than what he was last summer and we can't ask for more. "It's only 18 days until the Arc so we hope everything goes well with him until the race. "I believe the Arc to be the most prestigious race in the world and it is a great honour to be in a race with horses of the calibre of Hurricane Run and Shirocco." As in all of his races to date, Deep Impact will be ridden by Yutake Take on October 1. The rider knows what it takes to win the Arc as he was narrowly denied victory in 1999 when El Condor Pasa was headed in the final 100 yards by the brilliant Montjeu, the sire of Hurricane Run. "I'm very satisfied with his work," said Take. "At first he was looking around as if he was nervous but in the end he was very relaxed. "Conditions were perfect for him and it's a good preparation for the Arc. Everything is going very well so far. "I myself will have to be 100% ready for the race, this is the best race in the world. The only worry is the jockey himself! "He is easily the best chance I've had of winning the Arc. Deep Impact is twice as good as El Condor Pasa." Deep Impact is currently third favourite for the showpiece race at a general 4-1.

Anyone else think this horse gets too much attention? We hear everytime he takes a ****, but the defending champ, last years BC Turf winner, etc. hardly get any media attention at all. I wouldnt be at all surprised if this horse were beaten big time here. Long layoff. Toughest competition ever. Could be a beatin!

Obviously he's a very good horse but I wonder why they didn't prep in the Prix Foy like Hurricane Run did. Wouldn't he have gotten more out of that race, win or lose, than a work ( in 21 seconds? )?

IMPACT PLEASES AT CHANTILLY By Nick Robson, PA Sport Japanese star Deep Impact continued his preparation for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Sunday week with a racecourse gallop at Chantilly. The four-year-old, who has only met with defeat once in his 11-race career, has been lodging with Carlos Laffon-Parias since his arrival in France. The Sunday Silence colt covered six furlongs in the gallop, with the final furlong being clocked in an impressive 11 seconds. His trainer, Yasuo Ikee, was pleased with the work and also revealed that Deep Impact will have one more gallop before the showpiece event. "I was very satisfied with his work," said Ikee. "His time was not too fast but not too slow either. It was better than I expected. "Everything is currently going according to plan and everything seems to be perfect. "Deep Impact will be ready whenever the race is run. "He will have his final piece of work next Wednesday and that will be his last one before the race."

The subject of considerable market support in recent days, he covered six furlongs with two work companions. The four-year-old was partnered by big-race jockey Yutaka Take and completed the final four furlongs in 50 seconds and the final furlong in 12 seconds to prove his well-being. Speaking at a press conference following the gallop, trainer Yasuo Ikee said: "I didn't give any instructions to Yutaka today. I am quite satisfied with Deep Impact's final preparations. "He is in very good shape. All the staff, including myself, were very pleased to hear Yutaka say that he got a very good response from Deep Impact today. "We will do our best from now until the race day to make him 100% fit for the race. I am not too concerned about his draw and as representatives of Japan, we really want to win." Take was similarly impressed and once again stated his intention to become the first non-European based jockey to win the Arc. "The other two horses went off first and I followed behind," said Take. "Although I didn't use a whip, Deep Impact went two lengths clear of the others. I think this is the best work he's done since arriving here. "We want to gain the honour of being the first horse and the first jockey outside Europe to win the Arc de Triomphe. "I know that this is the hardest race to win in the world, so I want to be victorious. I believe that Deep Impact is a world-class horse and I will ride in the race with that belief. "I won't talk about his draw because if I say what I wish for, it probably won't come true! I would rather it didn't rain before the race. "I've received a lot of encouragement from so many peopleback in Japan. I want to win the Arc and make their dream come true. "If he wins this race, he will be recognised the best horse in the world and I sincerely hope to make him the best in the world." Deep Impact, who has been beaten just once in 11 starts, is the clear 5-2 favourite with Coral for Sunday's showpiece
