![]() Dark Kestrel is a sire that stands stud at the University of Florida Equine Reproduction Center. I posted about him before last year.
He made only 2 lifetime starts, and was out of the money in a 15K claimer in his 2nd start. Never ran a Beyer higher than 56. Anyway, he's had just 5 offspring to race so far - four of them have won. Trainer Louis Ruberto has had great luck with this sire. The first Dark Kestrel he had - was a $1,500 yearling who absolutely romped at 5/1 in his debut at Presque Isle. He came back in the 100K Fitz Dixon Memorial at PID and dueled with next out Grade 1 winner Noble's Promise most of the way - before giving way late and losing a tight photo for 3rd to Peppi Knows. The second Dark Kestrel that Ruberto has - he was a $3,300 yearling last year - he's run twice this year. A 2nd place finish in his debut and a romping win in a PID MSW race in start #2. He's already banked 28K and might run next in the Fitz Dixon Memorial. The third Dark Kestrel that Ruberto has - he was a $1,700 yearling buy last year. This horse is set to make it's career debut at Philly Park today in a 68K 2yo MSW race at 5 furlongs. It's interesting that they pass on these 36K 2yo MSW races at home - to van him 6 hours across state and go for the heavy chedder. Presque Isle's 2nd leading rider Scott Spieth is named to ride. It's his only mount the entire day on the Philly Park card today. Basically, you breed the best (thoroughbred stallion that the University of Florida Equine Reproduction Center has to offer) - to the best (hopeless broodmares that people donate to your university) - and if the great PID/MTR trainer Louis Ruberto buys them at auction for peanuts...you might have a runner. And in other news on todays Philly Park card - a horse Juan Carlos Gurrero claimed out of a lifetime condition $7,500 race - is 5/2 on the morning line to win a 72K Alw race. ![]() In fact, the horse missed the board in that lifetime condition $7,500 claimer he took him out of. That's how you win the Golden Syringe award right there. Winning at 42% for the year is no big deal - I'm not impressed. But, moving so many new ones up like JC "the Impaler" does routinely ... that's how you get it done. |
