Default Off The Turf @ Gulfstream????????

I noticed that the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday cards at Gulfstream have a total of three turf races carded. Actually there is no turf racing at all on Wednesday and Thursday and three on Friday (@ 1 1/2 miles, 5F and 1 mile). Am I missing something..is the turf in bad shape because of the lack of rain or are they having trouble filling grass events...something is weird about this. Anyone got any info?

They're not having trouble filling much thus far. This is the time of year where the turf used to get very chewed up in the past and those were in significantly rainier winters. It's been very dry this year and the course is starting to show some wear. They really need some rain before the Fla Derby to get it in ship shape.

Don't fear though, the flight to the north is forthcoming.

TURF, who plays the turf? Who likes any kind of change in surface or distance?

That's why I LOVE AQUEDUCT in the winter. I just love playing ONLY 6F sprints and those MILE, MILE and 70, and 8.5F routes. Keep it ****in simple.

Who wants variety?

They watered the course really heavy I believe Sunday night and knew they would cancel turf racing in the early portion of the following week. They've had zero inches of rain and the course needed a good helping of H2O.

Thanks for the update. I think this is the first time I can ever remember off the turf for lack of rain...kinda the opposite of last year's early part of the Saratoga meet.

There was a note on the overnight sheets last weekend that GP was going to "deep water" the turf and cancel turf racing for Wednesday and Thursday. The course is in terrible condition due to the 2-month drought in FL and there have been a number of breakdowns on it during racing and training. Hopefully this process will help, but I'm told it is no substitution for rain because the water they add through their own system does not have the same nutritional value as Mother Nature's. They do add minerals to it, but that is not as effective as rain.

I might make the end of the Oaklawn meet for the Apple Blossom and the other big days to end the meet. I very much enjoyed racing in the southern venues.
Beware of yankees.
