Default RMTC-TJC: Freezing of Test Samples Get Funding

This is a significant advance and has been advocated by the loudest critics of the current methods of drug 'deterenting'. Jerry Brown has been working with The Jockey Club on it quietly (unless you know him) for 2 years. Couple this with the lowering of CO2 levels to detect milkshake bullets that are registering just below current 'illegal' levels, and you'll have made real progress on inhibiting those taking an edge.

Frozen-Sample Drug Tests Get Funding

The Jockey Club Thoroughbred Safety Committee said Feb. 11 it will fund a Racing Medication and Testing Consortium (RMTC) frozen-sample and retrospective testing program that will begin in April. The program is part of the drug-testing initiative that evolved from a safety committee recommendation announced at The Jockey Club Round Table Conference in August 2008.

This is a good step but $150k is a very small amount. They need $5 million to really break through.

RMTC has to continue to raise the funding levels. This grant is a nice booster though and gets the storage facility aspect initiated. I'll have Dr. Waterman on to explain the details and plans..

The good thing about this is that Dr. Don Catlin (and others) can get their hands on some TB blood, and play with it to see what, if anything, is in there that we currently cannot detect.

What level do you think that should be?

For $150 i could have told them the answer to this question. The question isnt if but what.

It is a step in the right direction but a small step because as I said before $150k will barely cover the cost of refrigeration units and shipping costs of the samples.

The University of Kentucky is just about to start construction on a brand new Livestock Disease Diagnostic Center in Lexington (the old one is 40 years old).

I would guess there is a grateful place available for any generously charitable person who loves horses, and who would like the entire facility named after themselves, to fund an annual Endowed Chair
