Default Betting strategy

With the new year upon us, I'm really searching for a new beginning as far as my betting goes. Thru the years I've found it's harder to bet than to actually cap a race. I usually play win and exacta wagers, mainly keying a horse on top of 3. Occasionaly will throw a pick 4 ticket out there just to watch it go up in flames after the first leg. I was wondering how some of you all bet. Not so much how much (as we all have different bank rolls).

For instance: Do any of you wager WPS, WP or just W tickets? Do you key a horse in your exactas or do you box? Do you play Pick 3,4's? If so, is that all you play and what is your strategy as far as lining up your Pick 4's? Or is it better just to play tris and supers?

Basically, just trying to pick your brains a little, trying to find a strategy that fits me. I just feel my betting could be much better, and what better place to ask this other than here... Thanks

The most important thing for me to raise my ROI was meticulous record keeping. This enabled me to find out two things about my betting strategies.

1. Which tracks I can make money at and which tracks were eating my bankroll.
2. The type of wagers that best suited my handicapping style.

If you're not sure what type of player you are (WPS, verticle or horozontal) record keeping will quickly show you the way.

Stick to the tracks/meets (and wagers) that you are more profitable at and have the discipline to stay away from the tracks (and wagers) you don't do well at.

Default I sometimes do the following..

when there is a strong favorite at low odds that I agree could well roll, I will single that horse in a pick 3 and then be able to go wider in the next two legs while still keeping the ticket price low. Then I will exacta box 3 horses at at better prices in the race that I think could run at a decent return, sometimes with the fav. So, the exacta may become a saver bet, but if the favorite wins, my total investment, under $20, should still be more than covered if the pick 3 comes through.

I need to do more W WP betting for horses between 3/1 and 5/1......but for some reason I'm hooked on pick 3's and have had some nice payoffs this year..

good luck.. I/L

Record keeping is something I'm going to follow through with this coming year. Tried in the past and didn't keep up with it. Not this year.

Gonna make an effort to give Pick 3/4's more of a chance. I'm thinking I may stick to WP especially at 3/1 or higher. Then instead of exacta's and tri's, go with pick 3/4's.......

I play WPS/Ex but whether I box or key something depends on the payouts (always check the board before placing the wager to be sure I'm getting a good enough return on it). If the return isn't good enough, then I'll look at a tri instead and key the low odds horse (figuring a low price fav will win's normally the reason that an exacta price will be too low anyway).
Also, when playing pick 3's/4's, I always split my tickets up..... very similar to what Crist explains in Exotic Betting. That way, you don't have every ticket singled in the same race. There's always one ticket deeper in it, in case a big favorite tanks. I started doing that after reading the book and it's helped me out with those wagers tremendously (used to put all on one ticket, but would get too expensive and would inevitably drop a price horse that would win to bring the price of the ticket back to reality).

A good thing about Twin Spires is you can go back and isolate different bets, tracks, etc and see you wagers and ROI. Only thing is the bet hits tilt the stats
