Her appointment appears so random to me... but I know virtually nothing about her except that she has owned and ridden horses for years. That doesn't necessarily make her qualified in my book, but I'm hoping there's more reasons as to why she was appointed. The press coverage doesn't make it seem like she has a whole lot of credentials aside from being a political activist.

Bo actually does follow racing and has been involved in the anti-slaughter movement and racehorse retirement.
While I'm sure that there may be some more knowledgable people, she's certainly "name" enough to bring attention to racing issues in the mainstream.

For the record....
I am definitely ANTI-PETA, and often HSUS, I detest the Animal RIGHTS Activists, I firmly and strongly believe in animal WELFARE of which there is a huge difference.

While I find this abit puzzling that Bo Derek has been appointed, it is California and Hollywood Celebs bring attention.
What I have found though is very little to call her an Animal RIGHTS activists. She is not associated with PETA, and from what I can find doesn't actually belong to any group per say.
What she is an activist about is Horse Slaughter a complicated issue, but I respect her stand on it.She is a horsewoman and owner, so it's not like she knows nothing about horses and racing. She is asked to attend HSUS events but that doesn't make her a member, many celebs attend and get attention to their issues. As did Nick Zito and Willie Nelson.

She also is an activist for ILLEGAL wildlife trafficking, and Big Cat havens. I can also understand this a bit especially on the Big Cat issue as often times these cats raised as pets and then are sold to can hunt safaris, I am not a proponent of most can hunts.

What I do find about Bo Derek is that she actually attends horse racing, Kentucky Derby, etc.
I have been doing alot of searches about her as she is painted as an animal rights activist which is normally nails on a blackboard to me, but so far I find little to say she would not be good for horseracing. I think I will take a wait and see stance on this one. This is not at all like Connie Whitfield serving on the KHRA and being the lead fund raiser for HSUS.

she married well and through that made a movie that succeeded despite her own admitted lack of any acting talent.

other than looking good nude on horseback 3 decades ago, what exactly made her more qualified for the position than a box of rocks?
