No one seems to be reading too much into the low Remsen number.. Oddly run race with the winner bottled up.

I don't know. To me a slow race is a slow race. The winner was somewhat visually impressive, as was the second horse, but the others are very weak and I will be against them all down the road.

The 2YOs are a weak group so far. Maybe some of the recent West Coast winners can change that. I hope so.

Mushka has now made three straight wide moves compiling her 3/2-0-1 record.. BSF's do not account for ground loss, so her speed figures may be misleading. From a visual standpoint, she was mighty impressive Saturday, and her :24-ish burst to reach and pass the leaders is a great sign for the future. She should only get better.

From a company standpoint, she has finished behind only Backseat Rhythm and Country Star, which came in her debut going 8.5f on the Belmont lawn from the hedge. The former was third, albeit a distant third, in the BC Juvy Gals, and the latter won the (Gr. I) Alcibiades in her 2nd start..

As a point of comparison, Ashado received an 84 BSF when she won this event in 2003 as did Boca Grande last year. One of those got significantly faster at three... One didn't... As a daughter of Empire Maker out of a Seeking the Gold mare, it's no a surprise that Mushka was so effective getting the Demoiselle's 9f, and it stands to reason she is going to be even more formidable going 9f or more with the anticipated development curve of her sire's get.

Seriously... a slow race is a slow race. I liked Court Vision coming in, and yes he won, but I don't think any of these will make a major impact down the road.

On the flipside, The Cigar seemed better than the 114 published.

Don't you think it's more important to mention that she was the only horse out of seven that didn't gun for the lead and was the beneficiary of a huge relative pace?

One the second paragraph....you're not actually comparing her turf race to her dirt efforts....are you?

Mushika had a dream trip, she may be a nice filly but that setup was ideal.

How did daytona equal the stakes record of a race thats been won by alot of nice horses yet only get a 99? He had to have run faster then he did at santa anita.

I agree that the highly favorable pace setup more than made up for any ground she lost on the far turn.

Also, as I recall, the second place finisher was hung up about just as wide around the first turn as the winner was around the 2nd turn.

I don't think the winner did much more from a ground loss standpoint than the 2nd place horse - and I'd much rather be wide catapulting around tiring horses on the far turn ... than caught wide with a speed horse while up near a very strong pace in the first turn.

Also agree that the Remsen field - going 9fs with that kind of pace - were setup to look bad - and the winner had a bad trip to boot - but the winner sort of has a look of a dog biscuit to me...and the ones behind him have no look at best.

This opinion, not an unreasonable position, of course insures that these horses will become stars next year. [attempted irony]. Just think of the Remsen winners about whom much was made (Rockport Harbor, Saarland) who turned out to be less than stellar; surely the opposite will work.

Well, to debuke this idea, Nobiz was lauded last year and he turned out to be a useful horse on both dirt and turf, and the same went for Bluegrass Cat in '05. I find it a difficult prep to evaluate as 9F for 2YO's may just be too far.

you look at races like I do, I had the same observation right as the race was running. the effort was flattered imo because of Mushka lagging back from the lead pack, and in turn running on the proper pace for the distance. I am a bit sceptical that she is as good as she looked.
