Default Magical Moment For Red Sox Fans

Some nights your just not ready for the emotion to overcome you......some nights, that which used to be right about pro sports before it was a business is thrust upon you with little warning and little choice.

What the Red Sox received tonight wasn't for the team but for the legion of fans spread all over this country who have never seen the team clinch a division. They chose to give back to their fans who 90 minutes after the game played there was finished joined in an on field champagne celebration that rivaled the fall of 2004.

Watching with my youngest who probably unfairly suffers the affliction of happiness or dispair defined by whether the Sawks won or not that day.....saw a gift that left him in tears and not knowing why his head filled with seething misty eyed joy would overcome him so completely.

Melvin Mora, in a 9-9 extra inning game with the Yankees, laid a season winning suicide squeeze down perfectly after glancing up the third base line one pitch before giving the Boston Red Sox the American League East 2007 division crown......somehow what could have been a limp hearted groan of an end to the regular season in one gunslinging gambling moment will be remembered in Boston for all time.

Sharing that with a young boy is about as good as it gets in times like these and for the effort I simply say thank you Melvin. There are still 11 more to be won but none more enjoyable than the game Melvin won for the Sox tonight...

So the youngster so sagely says "who was playing for them when you saw them for the first time at Fenway Dad??"

OMG the Sawks in 1963 played the Ted Williams managed Senators with Frank Malzone at third, Rico Petrocelli at short,Dick Stuart at first and Yaz in left with a whole host of characters I can't remember at first glance....those days are gone for good.

Hope the past was rich for you Heels...

I saw the highlights of the celebration on NESN. They were having an awesome time. A huge sigh of relief for the Red Sox Nation. We get to relax for a few days before the Playoff march begins.

Is that their 1st? They finally popped their cherry? Really?

Who won the last 12 years?

What the Red Sox received tonight wasn't for the team but for the legion of fans spread all over this country who have never seen the team clinch a division

The team that won the last 12 years is the same one who will for all time have the greatest choke of a championship series ever in 2004 on their resume whenever this discussion is relavant!!!

thanks for sharing doc.
my baseball memories with my dad are far different. we were O's fans. after the 71 series i became a Clemente and Pirates fan. the 7th inning of the 79 series Willie Stargell hits a HR, the Bucs beat the O's and my dad didn't talk to me for 2 days!!

I've been alive for 12 Yankee Championships...more than the Red Sox in their whole history and BTW MORE than all the AL pennants you have won combined in all their years of playing!

If my Yanks don't win...I root for the Bosox....kind of keep it in the family...and hope they kick whoever wins the NL's butt...especially the NY MUTS.

What's different this year(about the YANKS) that makes ya think they are gunna do it? You got that Chambermaid guy,but Rivera is beatable late.Clemons is crafty, but not dominant.I guess they could get hot,and do it.Why would you expect it though.Good hitting/mediocre pitching seems a design that's better suited for the regular season.Could ALMOST say the same about the Phils, but the guy last night doesn't seem mediocre.
