I saw John Henry yesterday

I finally made it to the Horse Park to see John. He looked good, out eating in his paddock. A little skinny, but otherwise happy. He even posed for pictures. Cigar looked great and so did Da Hoss!

John's an old, old man now - I hope the fall is kinder to him than the summer was.

a little skinny? jesus if he was anywhere else the humane society would have taken him away....I wouldn't even say he looks good for his age anymore....getting old sucks.

Your so right, getting old does suck. I have a 25yr old QH gelding, ex racer. I try and try to keep him looking somewhat nice but I know I am fighting a losing battle. He has always been a very thin, long horse, not your typical QH to be sure. Not only that, he has been a cribber his whole life and now his top teeth are worn down completely. So he hasnt had far to fall to not look good and its getting harder and harder to see him like that. He is on Equine Senior which has been the best thing I have tried on him, but old age is tough. He has been a member of the family since he was a late yearling and it will be hard to see him go.

my horse oscar is a cribber and 17...he is just getting over a run with Potomac Horse Fever....he dropped about 100-150 pounds while he was sick and looks only a bit better than old John...if you keep them long enough they will break your heart and your check book more than once.

And yet we keep coming back for more I can't imagine a life without horses and dogs.

Glad to hear Oscar is doing better! Hope he continues to improve by leaps and bounds.

So true, they will break your heart and your check book. I have to say while running, Red more than paid for himself. He drew a check in every start except twice. No he wasnt a world champion but he is what this sport is all about, the working class racehorse. We could actually run him on a Thursday then agian on Sunday. If they had the 250yd races back then like they do now, I think they would have banned us from the track, cause he was the fastest thing out of a set of gates that most have ever seen. And then went on to become a Pro Rodeo winning barrel horse. Now he is living the life of Riley and I hope he has many more. Sorry as you can tell, he is the love of my life.

I saw him last week as well. Little tear for the old guy when I heard about him getting in the Breed Parade because he loves the clapping.
