Default Wacky, tough bet to launch with PIM opening: The Slider

Pimlico to offer new wager with $100,000 guaranteed jackpot
by John Scheinman

A new multi-race, ten-position wager called the “Slider,” will debut on April 1, opening day at Pimlico Race Course following the wager’s unanimous approval at the Maryland Racing Commission’s monthly meeting on Tuesday. The wager, with a base of 50 cents per combination and an 18% takeout, requires players to advance through four races of increasing difficulty to hit the jackpot, and there are no consolation payoffs. Players advance out of the first leg by selecting the winner, out of the second leg by selecting the exacta, out of the third leg by selecting the trifecta, and win the jackpot by selecting the superfecta of the fourth leg.

The combinations involved in the Slider wager are staggering. If each race averages eight betting interests then there are 252,887,040 available combinations, which is more than 964 times the available combinations available in a pick six sequence with eight betting interests or about the equivalent of a pick six with 25 betting interests in each race.

Carryover the key portion of it. NO consos so 82% carries to next day if it goes unhit. $100,000 guarantee should generate some interest.

That sounds like the "lottery" tri-super they have in dog racing, only infinitely more difficult.

Wow. Not opposed to it, but what the heck would a "caveman" style ticket look like? It had better be on an 8+1/2 x 11 piece of paper and not a little tote slip...

They do something similar at the Colonial Downs OTB's, although it is done as a free contest. They pick 3 consecutive races at 1 track. In the first contest race, you have to hit the exacta, but you can only box 3 horses. In the next race, you have to hit the trifecta only boxing 4 horses and the final race you have to hit the super boxing 5 horses. The prize is $100. If nobody wins, the $100 carryovers to the next week. The last time I was there, the carryover had grown to $3200. Pretty good change for a free contest, just a difficult bet to hit.

Great. Another lotto bet. Might as well just light your money on fire and go home if you are going to play this mess. Of course if they would have made it a dime and at 15% takeout then they could have raised take on their other bets and drastically increrased handle.

They should make a new wager where you can bet on the final time of a race down to the 1/100 of a second.

It would involve some skill, it would attract some sucker money, and the payoffs would be good.

They cant even accurately time races yet? TB clock is busted. The SPA clock at 6.5f's is wrong per you and see whack times all the time. The lawsuit would be daily

I wasn't exactly serious - but what the hell...

Use Randy Moss's fancy videotape equipment as the deciding factor.

Wont this bet take like an hour to call out at the window?

DrugS-Fair.com will gladly book all action on this wager - and give you a 10% rebate.

I would assume that it's going to be along the lines of a twin tri or tri-super where you have exchanges based on how many times you hit the prior leg.

If I'm right, then say you have 20 to win on the winner of the first leg. You now have 40 exchanges to play the exacta. If you choose to play just one combination then you have 40 exchanges to play the trifecta. So on and so forth.

The obvious impediments are that not every tote system (specifically the non-AmTote systems) are going to be able to handle this and I know from working as a mutuel clerk that the average one has no idea how to handle a wager like this.

I didn't get that impression.

To me - it sounded like a wager you'd call out:

50 cent Slider:

3
With
4-2
With
8-3-1
With
5-6-1-4

Yeah, I think you're right. That's painfully stupid.

Yeah then:
3
with
2-4
with
8-3-1
with
5-6-1-4

then
3
with
2-4
with
3-8-1
with 5-6-1-4

then.....

I think the superfecta in the last leg is a bit too much. 3 legs with the winner, exacta, tri is reasonable.
