![]() Sultry Song made his name at age 4 if I remember.
His best race was no better than Chief Honcho's best race. |

![]() I'm aware.....but he was a better horse than Chief Honcho.
Chief Honcho, however, was a lot better when he was running second to In Excess than the paper tigers we have these days. Didn't Smith whip him like 36 times when he won the Jim Dandy. |

![]() Chief Honcho ran a few big races...including the defeats to In Excess you mentioned- he also ran some poor ones - but I would think his best race was better than Sultry Song's best race ... but what would I know anyway, I was 10 at the time.

When he ran second to In Excess in the Suburban, which off the top of my head he lost by four lengths, he probably did run about as well as Sultry Song did in his better efforts so your original point is actually legit. However, as you said, Chief Honcho never really got it done. Unless Mike Smith tagged him over 30 times. I liked Sultry Song. Maybe it's because I won a bunch of money on him. I also liked Chief Honcho. But, when he was second to In Excess, who was a monster at that time, there was nobody else in the field. Sultry Song beat some OK horses ( that would be mislabeled great if they were running now ). |

![]() I liked Sultry Song as well, but would have liked him a lot more if he held off Rubiano in the NYRA Mile.

![]() I was always a fan of Solar Splendor.. even when he was old and running way over his head..
It's hard not to like a multiple Grade 1 winner that races for 5-6yrs... 1991 Turf Classic : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPwQC1h1kqQ |
