Default The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

-It feels so great to have a sore throat after a horse race.

-It feels terrible when 10 people call you after a race to ask "How much money did you win?" and you have to say "I lost almost $1500." And then they say "But you picked the winner," and you have to say "But I needed the horse who ran 3rd to run 2nd." And when they tell you that they bet Rags to Riches on your advice, you feel even dumber, but happy for them.

-I hit 4 of 6 in the Pick 6. I missed My Typhoon (on whom I have bet about 10 times in my life, mostly with positive results) and Teuflesberg (whom I labeled my favorite three-year-old in my KentuckyDerby.com blog this spring). I had Cotton Blossom. I had Will He Shine. I had Better Talk Now. I had Rags. 6 of 6 paid over $400,000. Had I used My Typhoon, I would have had 5 of 6 three times, for almost $10,000. Shoulda, woulda, didn't.

(I just answered the 11th phone call of the evening. This one was from the editior of the newspaper where my Belmont analysis appeared. His question: "How much did you win?")

-Just like I said when Pletcher announced Rags was entering the Belmont, "The sport needed this."

-What was up with ABC's coverage?

-What a great day.

-I'm done betting until Travers Day.
