A major pace factor maybe. This horse is very one-dimensional and apparently mentally very fragile, too. He didn't appear to do anything he didn't already do in his debut last October. Props to the connections for having the sense to stop on him in the spring and giving him a chance to start from scratch in a first condition, but as evidenced by his post parade scratch 3 weeks ago, not much has changed.
Blitzing a bunch of unheralded horses under ideal conditions is one thing, but what's he going to do when he has to feel the burn from Three Rules (who already outran him early in the Fountain of Youth) and maybe Recruiting Ready from the outset in the Allen Jerkens? Never mind horses like Practical Joke, American Anthem, Wild Shot, Kimbear, and Pavel waiting in the wings to light them all up in the stretch.
That aside, I wonder what the chances of Mark Casse calling yet another audible with Classic Empire and opting for the cutback in the Allen Jerkens as a means of "rebooting" the 2yo champ rather than the arduous task of running in the Travers off a layoff?
