clever enough to make it to Saratoga every year since 74. also clever enough not to bet all the odds on losers that Lenny Goodman used to give my dad when he had Cauthen's book.
feel good Saratoga story from about 8 years ago. A guy we took for the first time (small bettor) and who tagged along every year, was winning about $30 for the day. we get to the last race and he boxes a tri for a dollar. $24 bet is like $2400 to us. it's the last race before we head back to Beantown, so it was Alabama day or the day after. When we're getting to the track, we see Little Andy at 5 corners. Yell out the window, "we finally have something clever for you". We give him the hoss in the last, and of course he says "i love him, just gave him out at the seminar," It figures. Back then it didn't affect the board as much as now thank God The hoss is like 8-1 sits a perfect trip and wins off. Everyone scores, but the small bettor guy Mike hits the tri and cashes like $2400. He is delirious. To this day if you mention it he still lights up like a neon sign. He has not missed a year since, and has turned all of his friends and family into regulars.
