Queen’s Plate winner, Niigon, passes
TORONTO, October 14 – Niigon, winner of the 2004 Queen’s Plate and one of Canada’s leading sires, has died at the age of 11.
“He suffered a broken Femur in his stall and we were unable to save him,” said Rob Landry, General Manager for Chiefswood Stable, who raced the dark bay earner of $1.13 million and stood him at Colebrook Farms.
The son of Unbridled, who finished third in the 2004 edition of Jim Dandy Stakes, has sired 2012 stakes winners It’s Gail and Seen It All Before and 2011 stakes winners Niigon’s Touch, Reconnect and Ojibway Signal among his progeny.
"He was a tremendous racehorse and was only beginning to prove his worth as a sire,” said Landry, who piloted the Ontario-bred to his Queen’s Plate victory. “We will all miss him.”
