FWIW, I think taking a shot against a very heavy fav is a reasonable strategy in a contest like this. (As bigrun knows, there is no such thing as a lock!)

If the goal is to make the best use of one's time, then maybe it's better to take a shot early than wait two weeks for the number of serious players to dwindle. If you can eliminate 3/4 of the competition right away, then that might justify putting in some more time on the contest. If you avoid an early heavy fav loser, you could even reasonably play the most likely show horse the rest of the way, reasoning that most of your competitors are NOT choosing the most likely horses. (the ones choosing the most likely horse are gone!)
