Near fatality
Del Mar almost suffered its third fatality in the first three days of the meet when Appetizing, a 3-year-old filly, was vanned off after the fourth race on the turf course.
Track stewards initially reported the filly suffered broken sesamoids in her right front foreleg and was euthanized. They amended the report prior to the final race of Friday's card, saying the Barry Abrams-trained filly was alive and being examined by private veterinarians.
Abrams said late Friday night the filly suffered a suspensory (ligament) injury and would be able to come back in six months to race.
"The filly was dead tired and (jockey Chantal Sutherland) pulled her up too quick and she took a bad step," said Abrams. "The vets took X-rays, and there are no broken sesamoids. She doesn't have to be put down."
The daughter of Unusual Heat had earned $6,669 in her first two starts for owner Dyan Abrams.
Del Mar had one fatality during the races on Wednesday and another during morning training hours on Thursday.
