I always liked him but we obviously need a new approach in Iraq. If something is not working, you don't want to be stubborn and keep doing the same thing. You need to be open to trying a different approach. I am hopeful that Gates will have a fresh approach that is more effective than what we have been doing.
I still like Rumsfeld. He is an incredibly bright guy that has succeeded in everything he has done in his life. But as smart and successful as he has been, he was obviously was not getting the job done on Iraq. And it's not like he hasn't had enough time. He's had plenty of time and his approach does not seem to be working. I can't say for sure that a new approach will be any better but it's certainly worth a try.
