east of eden is a fantastic book, easily my favorite by steinbeck. also a fan of all of ernest hemingway, but don't read his stuff if you're looking for a happy ending.
1984 is interesting, but prefer orwell's animal farm. surprised there were no dostoevskys on the list-'crime and punishment' is good, but i like 'the idiot' better, and 'brothers karamazov' best.
to see a koontz or dan brown on the same list as some of the others is pretty disheartening.
