Dehere was and still is one of my favorite horses.
Our TV signal went out during the Breeders' Cup that fall. It was all snow, but if you turned it up loud enough, you could faintly hear the broadcast despite the distortion. I listened all day so I could find out whether Dehere won or not, keeping track of the winners on an index card. I vividly remember Durkin saying, "There's a new kid on the block..!"
